Effect of Adult Education on Parenting Information Use among Adult Learners
Abstract
Adult education provides learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies that can be applied to family and community life. Parenting information use is important because access to and effective use of relevant information can help parents make informed decisions about child care, education, health, behaviour, and general child development. However, some adult learners may have limited access to useful parenting information or may experience difficulties in understanding and applying such information. This study will examine the effect of adult education on parenting information use among adult learners. Adult education involves organized learning activities designed to meet the educational and practical needs of adults. These may include literacy education, parenting education, vocational training, community education, health education, and continuing education. Through classroom discussions, workshops, reading activities, practical exercises, and information-based learning, adult learners can develop skills for finding, understanding, evaluating, and applying useful information. Such educational experiences can expose learners to information relevant to family responsibilities and everyday decision-making. Parenting information use refers to the ability of parents to obtain, understand, evaluate, and apply information relating to the care, education, protection, and development of children. It may involve using information from educational materials, health resources, community programmes, schools, and other reliable sources to guide parenting practices. Adult education can influence parenting information use by improving learners’ literacy, information-handling abilities, critical thinking, and understanding of practical family-related issues. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected adult education programmes who are also parents or caregivers. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and parenting information use among adult learners. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on parenting information use among adult learners. It is anticipated that adult learners who participate in adult education programmes will demonstrate greater ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply parenting-related information. The study may also establish that adult education provides learners with practical knowledge and information-handling skills that can support more informed decisions concerning children and family responsibilities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of incorporating practical family-related information into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may use reading materials, discussions, case studies, practical exercises, and information-based activities that expose learners to relevant parenting information. Such approaches can make adult education more functional and help learners apply acquired knowledge and skills to real-life parenting situations. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, parents, family education providers, community organizations, educational institutions, policymakers, and child development organizations. Adult educators may use the findings to improve programmes that address the practical information needs of parents. Community organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to support adult education initiatives that improve parents’ ability to obtain and use reliable information for family decision-making. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities that develop parents’ ability to access, understand, evaluate, and use relevant parenting information. Adult educators should expose learners to reliable educational, health, child-development, and family-related information and provide opportunities to apply such information to everyday situations. It will also recommend stronger collaboration between adult education providers and family-support organizations in developing relevant learning resources. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to improved parenting information use among adult learners and support more informed family practices.
