Effect of Adult Education on Communication between Adults and Community Institutions
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies needed for personal, social, economic, and community development, while communication between adults and community institutions refers to the exchange of information, ideas, requests, and responses between adults and organizations that provide services or support within their communities. Effective communication with community institutions is important because it enables adults to seek information, express their needs, access available services, and participate in community affairs. However, limited educational opportunities may affect adults’ ability to communicate effectively with such institutions. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on communication between adults and community institutions. Adult education programmes provide learning opportunities through literacy education, continuing education, vocational training, community education, skills development, and other forms of adult learning. These programmes can develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, comprehension, and information-use abilities. Through classroom discussions, practical exercises, group activities, and community-based learning experiences, adult education can equip learners with communication skills that can be applied when interacting with institutions and service providers. Communication between adults and community institutions involves activities such as making enquiries, submitting requests, completing forms, seeking clarification, reporting concerns, receiving information, and responding to institutional instructions. Effective communication requires adults to understand information, express their needs clearly, ask relevant questions, and respond appropriately. Adult education may strengthen these abilities by improving learners’ language competence, confidence, comprehension, and ability to use information effectively. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a communication task designed to measure participants’ exposure to adult education and their ability to communicate effectively with community institutions. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on communication between adults and community institutions. Adults who participate effectively in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to express their needs, understand institutional information, make enquiries, complete required documents, and respond appropriately to institutional communication. The study may also establish that improved communication abilities can increase adults’ confidence when interacting with community institutions. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical communication activities that reflect the situations adults encounter when dealing with community institutions. Role-playing, form-completion exercises, guided conversations, information interpretation, letter writing, and practical enquiry activities can provide learners with opportunities to develop communication skills for real-life institutional interactions. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community institutions, programme coordinators, community leaders, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved communication abilities that enable them to access information and services more effectively. Adult educators may gain useful information for improving instructional practices, while community institutions and policymakers may use the findings to support educational approaches that promote more effective communication and interaction between adults and community service providers. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical communication activities based on the types of interactions adults have with community institutions. Adult educators should provide learners with opportunities to practise asking questions, interpreting information, completing documents, making requests, and expressing concerns appropriately. The study concludes that effective adult education can strengthen communication between adults and community institutions and improve adults’ ability to access services, obtain information, and participate actively in community affairs.
