Effect of Adult Literacy Education on Communication Skills among Rural Adults
Abstract
Adult literacy education refers to organized learning activities designed to help adults develop basic literacy, language, reading, writing, and practical communication abilities, while communication skills involve the ability to express ideas clearly, understand information, listen effectively, and interact appropriately with others. Effective communication is important among rural adults because it supports participation in community activities, access to information, economic activities, social relationships, and educational opportunities. However, limited literacy education may affect adults’ ability to communicate confidently and effectively in different situations. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult literacy education on communication skills among rural adults. Adult literacy education provides adults with opportunities to develop reading, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, and language-use abilities through structured learning activities. Instruction may involve reading exercises, writing practice, discussions, question-and-answer activities, storytelling, role-playing, and practical communication tasks. These learning activities can help adults improve their ability to understand information and express themselves more effectively in everyday situations. Communication skills among rural adults include oral expression, listening, reading comprehension, writing, and the ability to exchange information appropriately. These skills are useful when interacting with family members, community leaders, health workers, employers, customers, government officials, and other members of society. Participation in adult literacy education may strengthen these abilities by providing learners with regular opportunities to practise language use, express ideas, ask questions, interpret information, and respond appropriately to different communication situations. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise rural adults participating in selected adult literacy programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a communication skills assessment designed to measure participants’ exposure to adult literacy education and their communication abilities. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult literacy education has a significant effect on communication skills among rural adults. Adults who participate regularly in literacy education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to express ideas, understand spoken and written information, communicate in writing, and participate confidently in discussions. The study may also establish that practical literacy activities can provide rural adults with greater opportunities to develop communication abilities that are useful in everyday life. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to integrate communication-based activities into literacy instruction rather than concentrating only on reading and writing skills. Group discussions, role-playing, storytelling, guided conversations, writing exercises, and practical communication tasks can provide learners with opportunities to practise and improve their communication abilities in meaningful situations. The study will be significant to rural adults, adult educators, literacy programme coordinators, community leaders, educational planners, and policymakers. Rural adults may benefit from improved communication abilities that can support their participation in social, economic, and community activities. Adult educators and programme coordinators may gain useful information for improving literacy instruction, while educational planners and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen adult literacy programmes in rural communities. The study recommends that adult literacy programmes should incorporate practical communication activities alongside reading and writing instruction. Adult educators should create supportive learning environments where rural adults can practise speaking, listening, reading, and writing without fear of making mistakes. The study concludes that effective adult literacy education can contribute to the development of communication skills among rural adults and enhance their ability to participate more effectively in community and everyday activities.
