Effect of Literacy Education on Women’s Communication within Community Groups

Abstract

Literacy education refers to organized learning experiences designed to develop individuals’ abilities in reading, writing, comprehension, and the practical use of information, while communication within community groups refers to the ability of women to exchange ideas, express opinions, understand information, listen to others, and interact effectively with members of organized community groups. Effective communication is important within community groups because it supports cooperation, information sharing, collective planning, and the achievement of common goals. However, limited literacy skills may affect women’s ability to communicate confidently and participate effectively in group activities. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of literacy education on women’s communication within community groups. Literacy education provides women with opportunities to develop reading, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, and language-use skills through structured learning activities. Instruction may involve reading exercises, writing practice, group discussions, storytelling, question-and-answer sessions, and practical communication activities. These experiences can improve women’s ability to understand information, organize their thoughts, express ideas, and interact with others in different social and community situations. Communication within community groups involves speaking clearly, listening attentively, sharing information, asking questions, expressing opinions, and responding appropriately during group interactions. Women may need these skills when participating in meetings, cooperative activities, community associations, development groups, and other organized activities. Literacy education may strengthen communication abilities by improving women’s comprehension, vocabulary, confidence, and capacity to process and express information effectively. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise women participating in selected literacy education programmes and community groups. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a communication skills assessment designed to measure women’s exposure to literacy education and their communication abilities within community groups. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that literacy education has a significant effect on women’s communication within community groups. Women who participate regularly in literacy education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to express ideas, understand group information, ask questions, contribute to discussions, and communicate effectively with other group members. The study may also establish that improved literacy competence can increase women’s confidence and willingness to communicate during community group activities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to integrate communication-focused activities into literacy programmes designed for women. Group discussions, role-playing, storytelling, guided conversations, reading activities, and writing exercises can provide opportunities for women to practise communication in situations similar to those encountered within community groups. The study will be significant to women learners, adult educators, community group leaders, literacy programme coordinators, community development organizations, educational planners, and policymakers. Women may benefit from improved communication skills that enable them to contribute more effectively to group activities and discussions. Adult educators and programme coordinators may gain useful information for improving literacy instruction, while community leaders and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen programmes that promote women’s participation and communication within community organizations. The study recommends that literacy education programmes should incorporate practical communication activities that reflect women’s experiences in community groups. Adult educators should encourage group discussions, collaborative learning, public speaking, information-sharing exercises, and other activities that allow women to practise expressing and interpreting ideas. The study concludes that effective literacy education can improve women’s communication within community groups and enhance their ability to participate meaningfully in collective activities and community development.
