Effect of Community Adult Education on Family Participation in Educational Activities

Abstract

Community adult education provides learning opportunities that equip adults with knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to function effectively within their families and communities. Family participation in educational activities is important because active involvement of family members can support learners’ academic development, strengthen relationships with educational institutions, and promote a supportive learning environment. However, limited educational awareness and inadequate access to community-based learning opportunities may reduce the extent to which families participate in educational activities. This study will examine the effect of community adult education on family participation in educational activities. Community adult education involves organized learning activities provided within communities to address the educational, social, economic, and developmental needs of adults. Such programmes may include literacy education, parenting education, vocational training, civic education, health education, and community-based learning. Through discussions, workshops, practical activities, and group learning, adults can acquire knowledge about family responsibilities, educational support, communication, and the importance of participating in activities connected with education. Family participation in educational activities refers to the involvement of parents and other family members in activities that support learning and educational development. These activities may include attending school meetings, assisting with learning tasks, participating in educational programmes, communicating with teachers, supporting school events, and taking part in community educational initiatives. Community adult education can influence family participation by improving adults’ knowledge of educational responsibilities and equipping them with practical skills that encourage greater involvement in activities related to learning. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and families participating in selected community adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in community adult education and family participation in educational activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community adult education has a positive effect on family participation in educational activities. It is anticipated that families whose adult members participate in community adult education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in school-related activities, educational support, and community learning initiatives. The study may also establish that adult education provides families with relevant knowledge and skills that encourage them to take more active roles in supporting educational activities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in community adult education by emphasizing the need to connect adult learning with family educational responsibilities. Adult educators may incorporate parenting education, educational support strategies, communication activities, and practical family-learning exercises into programme delivery. These approaches can make community adult education more relevant to family needs while encouraging adults to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to educational activities involving their children and other family members. The study will be significant to adult educators, parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, educational institutions, policymakers, and community development organizations. Adult educators may use the findings to develop programmes that address the educational responsibilities of families. Schools and teachers may also benefit from increased family involvement in educational activities, while policymakers and community organizations may use the findings to strengthen community-based adult education programmes that encourage family support for education. The study will recommend that community adult education programmes should include practical learning activities that help adults understand and support educational responsibilities within their families. Adult educators should provide opportunities for parents and family members to learn about educational support, school involvement, communication, and participation in learning activities. It will also recommend stronger collaboration among adult education providers, schools, families, and community organizations. The study concludes that effective community adult education can contribute to increased family participation in educational activities and strengthen cooperation between families and educational institutions.
