Effect of Skills-Based Adult Education on Youth Self-Reliance
Abstract
Skills-based adult education is an educational approach that equips learners with practical knowledge, occupational abilities, and competencies that can be applied to real-life economic and social activities. Youth self-reliance is important because it enables young people to utilize their abilities to meet personal needs, make productive decisions, and reduce dependence on others. However, inadequate access to practical skills education may limit the capacity of youths to become economically and socially independent. This study will examine the effect of skills-based adult education on youth self-reliance, with emphasis on how practical learning opportunities can equip young people with competencies for independent living and productive activities. Skills-based adult education involves structured learning programmes that emphasize the acquisition and application of practical skills. Such programmes may include vocational training, entrepreneurship education, computer skills, agricultural training, craft production, business skills, and other occupational learning activities. Through demonstrations, practical exercises, projects, supervised activities, and skills practice, learners can acquire competencies that are applicable to employment, self-employment, household activities, and other productive areas. The practical nature of skills-based adult education makes it particularly relevant to youths seeking opportunities to apply their abilities outside formal schooling. Youth self-reliance refers to the ability of young people to utilize their knowledge, skills, and available resources to meet their needs and undertake productive activities with reduced dependence on others. It may be reflected in the ability to perform useful tasks, generate income, make responsible decisions, solve everyday problems, and utilize acquired skills for productive purposes. Skills-based adult education can influence youth self-reliance by providing practical competencies that enable young people to undertake occupational activities, develop income-generating abilities, and apply their learning to real-life challenges. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise youths participating in selected skills-based adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and practical skills assessment designed to measure participation in skills-based adult education and the level of youth self-reliance. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that skills-based adult education has a positive effect on youth self-reliance. It is anticipated that youths who participate in skills-based adult education programmes will demonstrate greater ability to apply practical skills to productive activities and manage certain personal and economic responsibilities. The study may also establish that exposure to practical skills training can improve young people's capacity to utilize acquired competencies for income generation, problem-solving, and independent activities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of practical and activity-based instruction. Adult educators may need to provide learners with sufficient opportunities for demonstrations, hands-on practice, project work, simulations, and real-life applications of acquired skills. Instruction should focus not only on theoretical knowledge but also on developing competencies that learners can apply independently in their daily lives and productive activities. The study will be significant to adult educators, skills-training providers, youth organizations, community development organizations, policymakers, educational institutions, and young people. Adult educators may use the findings to improve the practical content and delivery of skills-based programmes. Policymakers and youth organizations may also use the findings to strengthen skills-development initiatives, while young people may benefit from increased access to educational opportunities that equip them with useful competencies for independent and productive living. The study will recommend that skills-based adult education programmes should emphasize practical training, hands-on activities, entrepreneurship skills, and opportunities for learners to apply acquired competencies to real-life situations. Training centres should provide adequate equipment, qualified instructors, and practical learning environments that support effective skills acquisition. It will also recommend greater support for accessible skills-based adult education programmes for youths. The study concludes that effective skills-based adult education can contribute to strengthening youth self-reliance by equipping young people with practical competencies for productive and independent living.
