Effect of Literacy Education on Communication Skills among Out-of-School Youth

Abstract

Literacy education is an important component of adult education that develops individuals’ ability to read, write, understand, and communicate information effectively. Communication skills are essential for out-of-school youth because they support effective interaction, learning, employment, social relationships, and participation in community life. However, limited literacy opportunities may restrict young people's ability to express themselves clearly and understand written and spoken information. This study will examine the effect of literacy education on communication skills among out-of-school youth, with emphasis on how literacy learning can improve their ability to communicate effectively. Literacy education involves learning activities designed to develop reading, writing, comprehension, vocabulary, and the practical use of written information. Through literacy programmes, learners are exposed to reading exercises, writing activities, vocabulary development, comprehension tasks, and practical communication situations. These learning experiences can help out-of-school youth improve their ability to understand messages, organize their thoughts, use appropriate words, and communicate information in different situations. Communication skills refer to the ability to convey and receive information clearly and appropriately through oral and written forms. Among out-of-school youth, effective communication may involve expressing ideas clearly, understanding instructions, writing simple messages, reading information, participating in conversations, and responding appropriately to different communication situations. Literacy education can strengthen these skills by providing regular opportunities for learners to practise reading, writing, comprehension, vocabulary use, and verbal expression. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise out-of-school youth participating in selected literacy education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and communication skills assessment designed to measure participation in literacy education and the communication skills of the youths. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that literacy education has a positive effect on the communication skills of out-of-school youth. It is anticipated that youths who participate in literacy education programmes will demonstrate improved reading comprehension, writing ability, vocabulary use, and oral expression. The study may also establish that regular exposure to literacy activities provides out-of-school youth with practical opportunities to develop communication abilities that can be applied in everyday social, educational, and work-related situations. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of practical communication activities in literacy programmes. Literacy educators may incorporate reading discussions, writing exercises, role-playing, vocabulary activities, comprehension tasks, and everyday communication exercises into programme delivery. These approaches can make literacy learning more practical and provide learners with opportunities to apply newly acquired communication skills to real-life situations. The study will be significant to adult educators, literacy facilitators, youth development organizations, community organizations, educational institutions, policymakers, and agencies working with out-of-school youth. The findings may help literacy educators improve programme content and instructional approaches for developing practical communication abilities. Youth organizations and policymakers may also use the findings when designing educational interventions aimed at improving the functional skills and social effectiveness of out-of-school youth. The study will recommend that literacy education programmes should place greater emphasis on practical reading, writing, comprehension, vocabulary, and oral communication activities. Literacy educators should provide regular opportunities for out-of-school youth to practise communication skills through discussions, presentations, role-playing, and real-life literacy tasks. It will also recommend increased access to flexible and community-based literacy programmes for out-of-school youth. The study concludes that effective literacy education can contribute significantly to improving the communication skills of out-of-school youth.
