Impact of Adult Education on Women’s Participation in Community-Based Organisations

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and community development, while participation in community-based organisations refers to women’s involvement in local associations, development groups, cooperative societies, social organizations, and other organized groups within their communities. Participation in such organisations is important because it provides opportunities for women to contribute ideas, access support, develop relationships, and participate in activities that promote community development. However, limited educational opportunities may affect women’s confidence, communication abilities, and capacity to participate actively in community-based organisations. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of adult education on women’s participation in community-based organisations. Adult education programmes provide women with opportunities to acquire literacy, communication, leadership, vocational, entrepreneurial, and social skills. Through classroom discussions, group activities, practical exercises, skills training, and community-based learning, women can develop competencies that support active involvement in organized community activities. These educational experiences can also expose women to new ideas, encourage interaction with other learners, and improve their awareness of opportunities for community participation. Participation in community-based organisations involves activities such as attending meetings, contributing to discussions, taking part in group projects, holding organizational responsibilities, supporting community initiatives, and participating in collective decision-making. Effective participation requires communication skills, confidence, knowledge, cooperation, and the ability to interact with other members. Adult education may strengthen these abilities by providing women with learning experiences that encourage communication, collaboration, leadership, and active participation. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise women participating in selected adult education programmes and community-based organisations. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure women’s exposure to adult education and their level of participation in community-based organisations. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant impact on women’s participation in community-based organisations. Women who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in organizational meetings, group activities, community projects, leadership responsibilities, and collective decision-making. The study may also establish that improved knowledge, communication skills, and confidence gained through adult education encourage women to become more active members of community-based organisations. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate activities that develop leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and community participation skills. Group discussions, collaborative projects, role-playing, leadership exercises, and community-based assignments can provide women with practical opportunities to apply what they learn and develop greater confidence in organizational participation. The study will be significant to women learners, adult educators, community-based organisations, programme coordinators, community leaders, educational planners, and policymakers. Women may benefit from improved skills and greater confidence to participate in organized community activities. Adult educators and programme coordinators may gain useful information for improving programme content and delivery, while community organizations and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen adult education initiatives that encourage women’s active involvement in community development. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical activities that encourage women to develop communication, leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills. Adult educators should provide opportunities for women to participate in group projects and community-based activities where they can practise these competencies. The study concludes that effective adult education can increase women’s participation in community-based organisations and strengthen their contribution to community development and collective social activities.
