Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Draft Simple Formal Letters
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies, while the ability to draft simple formal letters refers to the capacity to prepare clear, properly structured, and appropriately worded written communications for official purposes. The ability to draft formal letters is important for communicating requests, enquiries, complaints, applications, and other official matters. However, some adults may experience difficulties in organizing ideas, selecting appropriate language, following accepted letter formats, and expressing their purpose clearly. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to draft simple formal letters. Adult education provides adults with learning experiences that can strengthen literacy, writing, communication, and practical language competencies. In relation to formal letter writing, learning activities can expose adults to the basic structure of formal letters, including appropriate addresses, dates, salutations, subject lines, introduction, body, conclusion, and complimentary closing. Through demonstrations, guided writing, practical exercises, sample letters, and corrective feedback, adults can develop the ability to organize information and communicate their intended messages appropriately. The ability to draft simple formal letters involves several competencies, including identifying the purpose of the letter, organizing ideas logically, selecting appropriate formal language, presenting relevant information, maintaining proper letter structure, and reviewing written content for accuracy and clarity. Adults with these skills can communicate official requests, enquiries, complaints, and other matters more effectively. Adult education can strengthen these competencies by providing learners with regular opportunities to study formal writing conventions, practise drafting letters, and improve their work through feedback. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to draft simple formal letters. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured formal-letter writing assessment designed to evaluate participants’ ability to organize and present formal letters appropriately. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to draft simple formal letters. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in organizing ideas, applying appropriate formal language, following accepted letter structure, expressing their purpose clearly, and presenting information accurately. The study is also expected to indicate that repeated writing practice and constructive feedback can improve adults’ confidence and competence in preparing formal correspondence. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate practical letter-writing activities into adult learning programmes to strengthen learners’ written communication abilities. Exercises involving requests, enquiries, complaints, applications, invitations, and other appropriate formal correspondence can provide realistic opportunities for learners to practise drafting letters. Guided writing, peer review, corrections, and feedback can further support the development of effective formal writing skills. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, employers, educational institutions, and other organizations that require formal written communication. Adult learners may develop greater competence in communicating official matters through written correspondence, while adult educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical writing skills. Organizations may also benefit from adults who can prepare clear and properly structured letters for official communication and administrative purposes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical instruction in formal letter writing and provide learners with regular opportunities to draft different types of simple formal letters. Adult educators should emphasize proper structure, organization of ideas, appropriate language, clarity, accuracy, and presentation while providing constructive feedback on learners’ written work. Real-life writing tasks should also be incorporated into lessons to strengthen practical competence. The study concludes that adult education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ ability to draft simple formal letters and enhance their capacity to communicate effectively in formal situations.
