Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Emergency Contact Information

Abstract

Adult education provides individuals with practical knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to situations that require timely decisions. One important practical safety skill is the ability to identify emergency contact information, which involves recognizing relevant telephone numbers, contact details, and communication channels that can be used to seek assistance during emergencies. Knowing where to find and how to recognize appropriate emergency contact information can help adults communicate with relevant services or trusted contacts when urgent assistance is required. However, limited knowledge of emergency contact information may delay communication during emergency situations. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify emergency contact information. Adult education can improve adults’ ability to identify emergency contact information through structured lessons, discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, and practical exercises. Learning activities may introduce adults to different categories of emergency contacts and teach them how to recognize reliable contact information provided through official notices, communication materials, emergency resources, and other appropriate sources. Scenario-based activities can further help learners practise locating and identifying relevant contact details in situations requiring urgent assistance. The ability to identify emergency contact information enables adults to recognize the appropriate details needed when seeking assistance during emergencies. Adults with this ability may be better positioned to distinguish emergency contact information from unrelated information, locate relevant contact details, and determine which communication channel is appropriate for a particular situation. Adult education may therefore strengthen this skill by improving adults’ practical information-recognition abilities and providing opportunities to practise identifying emergency contacts in realistic situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an emergency contact information identification assessment containing selected contact details and realistic emergency information scenarios. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify emergency contact information. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify emergency contact information. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize appropriate emergency contact details, locate relevant information, and distinguish useful emergency contacts from unrelated information. The study may also reveal greater confidence among adult learners in identifying contact information when faced with situations requiring urgent communication. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical safety and information skills in adult education programmes. Adult educators may be encouraged to use realistic emergency notices, contact directories, visual materials, demonstrations, discussions, and scenario-based exercises. These approaches can help adults develop practical skills for recognizing and locating emergency contact information and applying the knowledge to situations outside the classroom. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, emergency-management educators, community organizations, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop stronger abilities to identify relevant emergency contact information, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical information-recognition skills. Curriculum planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen emergency-information components within adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical activities that improve adults’ ability to identify emergency contact information. Adult educators should use realistic scenarios, visual materials, demonstrations, sample notices, and participatory exercises to reinforce learners’ ability to locate and recognize relevant contact details. It is concluded that effective adult education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify emergency contact information and support timely access to appropriate assistance during emergency situations.
