Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Simple Distance Measurements
Abstract
Simple distance measurements refer to basic measurements used to determine the space between two points, locations, or objects. Adults’ ability to interpret these measurements involves understanding units such as metres, kilometres, centimetres, and other commonly used distance indicators, as well as comparing and applying distance information in everyday situations. Difficulty in interpreting distance measurements may affect activities such as travelling, estimating locations, reading directions, and planning movement. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret simple distance measurements. Adult education can provide practical learning experiences that develop adults’ understanding of basic distance concepts and measurement units. Through demonstrations, visual materials, guided exercises, and practical activities, learners can be taught how to recognize distance units, read measurements, compare distances, and relate numerical measurements to familiar physical spaces. These activities can make distance concepts easier to understand and encourage adults to apply measurement knowledge in everyday situations. Adults’ ability to interpret simple distance measurements involves correctly reading numerical distance information, distinguishing between measurement units, comparing different distances, and understanding what a stated measurement represents in a practical context. Adult education can strengthen these abilities through repeated exercises involving maps, measuring instruments, signs, diagrams, and everyday distance examples. Improved interpretation skills may enable adults to make more accurate judgments about distances and use distance information effectively. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and practical assessment items designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ ability to interpret simple distance measurements. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to interpret simple distance measurements. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify distance units, read numerical measurements, compare distances, and apply distance information to practical situations. The findings may also indicate that practical and visual learning activities are effective in strengthening adults’ understanding of basic distance measurements. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of functional numeracy within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical measurement activities rather than relying primarily on theoretical explanations. Using measuring instruments, maps, diagrams, familiar locations, and real-life examples can help learners connect numerical distance information with their everyday experiences. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, households, and organisations involved in adult literacy and numeracy programmes. Adults may develop greater confidence in interpreting distance information encountered in everyday life, while educators may gain useful strategies for teaching practical measurement concepts. Improved distance interpretation may also support adults in activities involving movement, travel planning, and understanding location-related information. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical activities that develop adults’ ability to interpret simple distance measurements. Adult educators should use demonstrations, measuring tools, visual materials, guided exercises, and familiar real-life examples to reinforce learning. Relevant organisations should support functional numeracy programmes that develop practical measurement skills among adults. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to interpret simple distance measurements when instruction is practical, clear, and connected to everyday experiences.
