Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Prepare Simple Meeting Agendas
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies, while the ability to prepare simple meeting agendas refers to the capacity to identify meeting objectives, select relevant issues, arrange discussion items logically, and present them in a clear format. The preparation of effective meeting agendas is important for promoting orderly discussions, proper time management, focused participation, and achievement of meeting objectives. However, some adults may have limited ability to structure meeting information and organize discussion points before community, workplace, or organizational meetings. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to prepare simple meeting agendas. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to develop practical organizational and communication skills through structured learning experiences. In relation to agenda preparation, learning activities can introduce adults to identifying the purpose of a meeting, determining appropriate discussion items, arranging issues according to priority, allocating time to agenda items, and presenting information in a logical sequence. Through demonstrations, practical exercises, group activities, and guided practice, adult learners can develop the ability to transform meeting information into a simple and understandable agenda. The ability to prepare simple meeting agendas involves several competencies, including identifying meeting objectives, selecting relevant topics, sequencing discussion items, allocating appropriate time, and presenting agenda information clearly. Adults who possess these skills can provide participants with a clear understanding of what will be discussed and the expected direction of a meeting. Adult education can strengthen these competencies by providing learners with opportunities to practise agenda preparation using realistic meeting situations and by encouraging them to organize information according to purpose and priority. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to prepare simple meeting agendas. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be drawn using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to prepare simple meeting agendas. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on the identified skill. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to prepare simple meeting agendas. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in identifying meeting objectives, selecting relevant discussion points, arranging agenda items logically, and presenting them in an organized format. The study is also expected to indicate that practical exercises and guided activities can improve adults’ confidence and competence in preparing agendas for different types of meetings. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate practical administrative and communication activities into learning programmes to develop learners’ ability to prepare meeting agendas. Demonstrations, role-playing, group assignments, mock meetings, and agenda-writing exercises can provide learners with opportunities to apply the skills acquired during instruction. Such practical approaches can make adult education more relevant to situations in which learners participate in community, workplace, and organizational activities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, workplace groups, voluntary associations, and other institutions that depend on organized meetings. Adult learners may acquire practical skills for structuring meeting discussions and communicating meeting priorities effectively, while adult educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical organizational competencies. Organizations may also benefit from members who can prepare clearer agendas that support focused discussion, effective time use, and orderly meetings. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical activities focused on meeting organization and agenda preparation. Adult educators should provide learners with opportunities to identify meeting objectives, prioritize discussion issues, sequence agenda items, allocate time, and prepare simple written agendas. Regular mock meetings and practical agenda-writing exercises should also be encouraged to reinforce learning. The study concludes that adult education can improve adults’ ability to prepare simple meeting agendas and strengthen their capacity to contribute effectively to organized meetings.
