Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Set Community Project Objectives

Abstract

Adult Education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and practical competencies that can improve their ability to participate effectively in community development activities. Community project objectives are clear statements of what a project intends to achieve within a specified period and with available resources. The ability to set appropriate objectives is important because well-defined objectives provide direction, guide project activities, and support the assessment of project outcomes. However, inadequate planning knowledge may make it difficult for some adults to establish clear and realistic objectives for community projects. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to set community project objectives. Adult Education provides learning experiences that can help adults understand the principles of effective objective setting. Through discussions, practical exercises, case studies, group activities, and problem-solving tasks, adults can learn how to identify community needs, establish priorities, define desired outcomes, and formulate realistic project objectives. These learning approaches can also help adults understand the relationship between identified community needs, available resources, planned activities, and expected project outcomes. Adults’ ability to set community project objectives refers to their capacity to formulate clear, specific, realistic, and achievable statements that describe the intended results of a community project. Effective objective setting requires adults to understand the needs being addressed, identify expected changes, establish appropriate targets, and consider available resources and time. Adults who can develop appropriate project objectives are better positioned to provide clear direction for project activities and evaluate whether intended outcomes are being achieved. Adult Education can therefore contribute to strengthening the knowledge and practical skills required for effective objective setting. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes and community-based learning activities. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to Adult Education and their ability to set community project objectives. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to set community project objectives. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify project priorities, formulate clear objectives, establish realistic targets, and align objectives with identified community needs. The study may further show that practical learning experiences enable adults to apply objective-setting principles more effectively when planning community projects. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to include practical objective-setting exercises within community development-related learning programmes. Group projects, case studies, simulations, community needs assessments, and project-planning exercises can provide adults with opportunities to practise formulating appropriate objectives. Such teaching approaches can strengthen learners’ ability to connect community needs with realistic project outcomes and improve the practical relevance of Adult Education. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community development organizations, community groups, project committees, non-governmental organizations, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may acquire practical skills for contributing more effectively to community project planning. Community organizations and project committees may benefit from members who can establish clear project objectives, while adult educators may use the findings to improve the content and delivery of community development education. Programme administrators may also use the findings to strengthen project-planning components of adult education programmes. The study recommends that Adult Education programmes should provide practical learning opportunities that develop adults’ ability to formulate clear and achievable community project objectives. Adult educators should employ case studies, group exercises, project simulations, and community-based assignments to strengthen objective-setting skills. Community organizations should also encourage trained adults to participate actively in project planning and objective formulation. The study concludes that Adult Education can improve adults’ ability to set appropriate community project objectives and contribute to more focused and organized community project implementation.
