Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Use Emergency Contact Networks

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to provide adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies, while the ability to use emergency contact networks refers to adults’ capacity to identify, access, and appropriately communicate with designated individuals or services during emergency situations. Effective use of emergency contact networks can facilitate timely communication, assistance, and coordination when urgent situations arise. However, limited knowledge of appropriate emergency contacts and communication procedures may hinder effective responses. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to use emergency contact networks. Adult education can expose adults to information about different categories of emergency contacts, appropriate communication channels, contact identification, and procedures for reporting emergencies. Through discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, scenario-based activities, and instructional materials, learners can develop the knowledge required to identify suitable contacts and communicate essential information during emergencies. Such educational activities can also help adults understand the importance of using appropriate communication channels and providing clear information when seeking assistance. The ability to use emergency contact networks involves identifying appropriate contacts, accessing relevant contact information, selecting suitable communication channels, communicating essential details, and seeking assistance through established networks. Adults who receive relevant education may become more capable of using these networks appropriately during emergency situations. The study will therefore investigate whether adult education contributes to improved ability to use emergency contact networks among adults. The study will adopt an appropriate research design, such as a descriptive survey or quasi-experimental design, depending on the study setting. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where appropriate, practical communication tasks designed to assess adults’ ability to use emergency contact networks. The data obtained will be analysed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that exposure to adult education improves adults’ ability to use emergency contact networks. Adults who receive relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate emergency contacts, improved ability to access contact information, and greater competence in communicating essential information when seeking assistance. These expected findings would demonstrate the importance of adult education in developing practical communication skills for emergency situations. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of emergency communication within adult education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate realistic scenarios, communication exercises, demonstrations, role-playing, and practical activities into lessons. These approaches can enable adults to practise identifying appropriate contacts and communicating relevant information clearly, thereby making emergency communication education more practical and applicable to everyday situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, households, community organizations, emergency response organizations, workplaces, and other institutions involved in emergency preparedness. Adults may develop greater confidence and competence in accessing appropriate emergency contact networks, while educators may gain useful information for improving emergency communication instruction. Community and organizational stakeholders may also use the findings to strengthen emergency communication awareness and preparedness activities. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide practical instruction on identifying, accessing, and appropriately using emergency contact networks. Learning activities should include realistic communication scenarios, clear instructional materials, demonstrations, and periodic practice exercises. Adults should also be encouraged to maintain accurate and accessible emergency contact information and understand the appropriate circumstances for using different contacts. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ ability to use emergency contact networks and strengthen timely communication during emergency situations.
