Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Write Formal Applications

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies, while the ability to write formal applications refers to the capacity to prepare clear, properly structured, and appropriate written requests for employment, admission, services, programmes, or other official purposes. Effective formal application writing is important for accessing employment opportunities, educational programmes, public services, and organizational opportunities. However, some adults may experience difficulties in organizing application content, using appropriate language, presenting relevant information, and following accepted formal writing conventions. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to write formal applications. Adult education provides adults with learning experiences that develop literacy, writing, communication, and practical language skills. In relation to formal application writing, learning activities can expose adults to the structure of formal applications, appropriate openings and closings, organization of information, clear expression of purpose, accurate presentation of personal qualifications, and suitable language for official communication. Through demonstrations, writing exercises, guided practice, corrections, and practical assignments, adults can develop the skills required to prepare effective formal applications. The ability to write formal applications involves several competencies, including identifying the purpose of an application, organizing relevant information, using appropriate formal language, presenting qualifications or requests clearly, maintaining proper structure, and checking written work for accuracy. Adults who possess these skills can communicate their intentions and qualifications more effectively when applying for opportunities or making formal requests. Adult education can strengthen these abilities by providing learners with opportunities to study examples, practise application writing, receive corrections, and improve their written communication. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to write formal applications. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured formal application writing assessment designed to evaluate participants’ ability to organize, write, and present formal applications appropriately. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to write formal applications. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in organizing application content, using appropriate formal language, expressing their purpose clearly, presenting relevant information, and following acceptable application-writing conventions. The study is also expected to show that repeated writing practice and constructive feedback can improve adults’ confidence and competence in preparing formal applications. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate practical writing activities into adult learning programmes to strengthen learners’ formal application-writing skills. Exercises involving employment applications, educational applications, requests for services, and other official correspondence can provide realistic opportunities for learners to apply writing techniques. Guided practice, peer review, correction, and feedback can further support the development of accurate and effective formal writing skills. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, employers, educational institutions, community organizations, and agencies that provide opportunities or services requiring formal applications. Adult learners may develop greater competence in preparing written applications and communicating their qualifications or requests effectively. Adult educators may also gain useful approaches for teaching practical writing skills, while organizations may benefit from applicants who can communicate relevant information clearly and appropriately through formal written applications. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical instruction in formal application writing and provide learners with regular opportunities to practise different types of applications. Adult educators should teach appropriate structure, language use, organization of information, clarity, accuracy, and presentation, while providing constructive feedback on learners’ written work. Real-life application-writing tasks should also be incorporated into lessons to strengthen practical competence. The study concludes that adult education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ ability to write formal applications and enhance their capacity to access educational, employment, and other formal opportunities.
