Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Intercultural Dialogue

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, develop positive attitudes, and improve their ability to interact with people from different backgrounds. Intercultural dialogue refers to open, respectful, and constructive communication between people from different cultural backgrounds, with the aim of promoting mutual understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives. Negative attitudes toward intercultural dialogue may encourage cultural misunderstanding, prejudice, stereotyping, social distance, and unwillingness to engage with people from different cultural groups. The study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ attitudes toward intercultural dialogue. Adult education exposes learners to different perspectives, experiences, values, languages, traditions, and social practices through classroom instruction, group discussions, collaborative activities, storytelling, and other participatory learning experiences. These educational activities can provide adults with opportunities to examine cultural similarities and differences and reflect on how cultural assumptions influence human interaction. Through meaningful interaction and guided learning, adult education can encourage openness, respect, tolerance, and willingness to engage constructively with people from different cultural backgrounds. Adults’ attitudes toward intercultural dialogue involve their willingness to listen to, communicate with, understand, and engage respectfully with people whose cultural backgrounds or perspectives differ from their own. Positive attitudes may encourage openness to different viewpoints, respect for cultural differences, willingness to participate in cross-cultural conversations, and avoidance of prejudicial assumptions. Adult education can influence these attitudes by creating learning experiences that expose adults to diverse perspectives and encourage reflection on the value of respectful communication across cultural boundaries. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to adult education and their attitudes toward intercultural dialogue. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ attitudes toward intercultural dialogue. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater openness to interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds, willingness to listen to alternative perspectives, and respect for cultural differences. The study is also expected to show that adult education can reduce negative attitudes arising from cultural misconceptions and encourage greater willingness to engage in constructive intercultural conversations. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the importance of intercultural learning experiences within adult education programmes. Adult educators may use group discussions, cultural case studies, collaborative learning, storytelling, and reflective activities to encourage learners to examine different cultural perspectives. Such approaches can create opportunities for respectful interaction and help adults develop attitudes that support meaningful dialogue across cultural differences. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, families, community organizations, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may benefit from more positive attitudes toward interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing inclusive and culturally responsive learning activities. Community organizations may use the findings to strengthen programmes that encourage mutual understanding and respectful communication, while programme planners may use the results to improve the cultural dimensions of adult education. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate intercultural learning content and provide opportunities for learners to interact with diverse perspectives. Adult educators should employ participatory methods that encourage respectful discussion, cultural reflection, active listening, and appreciation of different viewpoints. Learning materials should represent cultural diversity accurately and avoid reinforcing stereotypes or prejudice. It is concluded that adult education can serve as an important avenue for developing positive attitudes toward intercultural dialogue and promoting respectful communication among adults from diverse cultural backgrounds.
