Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Animation Techniques

Abstract

Basic animation techniques refer to the methods used to create the appearance of movement by arranging, manipulating, and sequencing visual elements in a deliberate manner. Adult education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills for understanding fundamental animation processes and techniques. Adequate knowledge of basic animation is important for developing creative abilities, producing digital content, supporting visual communication, and creating opportunities for participation in media and technology-related activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic animation techniques. Adult education can expose learners to animation techniques through practical demonstrations, guided exercises, digital projects, group activities, visual examples, and supervised practice. These learning activities can introduce adults to basic concepts such as keyframes, sequencing, movement, timing, transitions, layering, and simple object manipulation. Learners can also use appropriate animation applications to practise creating short animated sequences and observe how changes in timing and movement affect the final output. Such hands-on activities can enable adults to connect theoretical knowledge with practical animation production. Adults’ knowledge of basic animation techniques refers to their ability to identify, explain, and appropriately apply fundamental methods used in creating simple animated content. This includes understanding the purpose of keyframes, sequencing, timing, transitions, layering, movement, and basic animation workflow. Improved knowledge can enable adults to make informed decisions when planning and producing simple animations for educational, creative, or communication purposes. Adult education is therefore expected to strengthen this knowledge through structured learning, experimentation, practical exercises, and guided feedback. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, digital media, creative arts, and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate animation knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of basic animation techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic animation techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic animation techniques. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of keyframes, sequencing, timing, transitions, layering, movement, and basic animation procedures. The study may also indicate that practical digital exercises and supervised animation projects are particularly useful for strengthening learners’ ability to understand and apply animation concepts. Such findings would demonstrate the value of adult education in developing digital creativity and practical knowledge relevant to animation and content production. The study is significant because improved knowledge of basic animation techniques can support digital creativity, visual communication, educational content production, and participation in creative technology activities. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes incorporate practical animation exercises, demonstrations, guided digital projects, and supervised practice to strengthen learners’ knowledge. Educators should also provide access to appropriate digital tools and encourage adults to experiment with basic animation techniques through practical projects. The study concludes that adult education can serve as an important means of improving adults’ knowledge of basic animation techniques and strengthening their capacity to participate effectively in digital creative activities.
