Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Wound-Care Procedures

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills that can improve their ability to manage everyday situations. Basic wound-care knowledge refers to an individual’s understanding of appropriate procedures for cleaning, protecting, and monitoring minor wounds while recognizing when professional medical attention is necessary. Limited knowledge of proper wound care may result in poor handling of wounds, increased risk of contamination, or delayed treatment. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures. Adult education on wound care may involve structured lessons, demonstrations, discussions, practical activities, and instructional materials designed to develop learners’ understanding of basic wound-management principles. Participants may be introduced to appropriate hand hygiene, safe cleaning of minor wounds, protection of injured areas, proper use of basic wound-care materials, and methods of monitoring wounds for signs that require further attention. Practical learning can help adults connect theoretical information with procedures that may be encountered in everyday life. Adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures involves their ability to identify appropriate steps for managing minor wounds and distinguish safe practices from inappropriate ones. This knowledge includes understanding basic hygiene, wound protection, the appropriate use of simple materials, and the importance of seeking qualified medical care when an injury is serious or does not improve. Adult education can provide systematic instruction that strengthens understanding and reduces reliance on inaccurate or unsafe practices. Improved knowledge may consequently enhance adults’ ability to make appropriate decisions when dealing with minor wounds. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured knowledge assessment administered before and after exposure to the educational programme. The data will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the difference in participants’ knowledge following the intervention. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to structured wound-care education demonstrate greater knowledge of basic wound-care procedures than they had before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show improved understanding of appropriate wound-cleaning, protection, hygiene, and monitoring procedures. The study may also reveal increased recognition of situations in which professional medical attention is required, indicating that adult education can strengthen adults’ knowledge for safer management of minor wounds. The findings are expected to have important implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use demonstrations, illustrations, guided discussions, practical scenarios, and question-and-answer activities to make wound-care lessons understandable and relevant to adults. Teaching should emphasize simple procedures that learners can understand while clearly identifying situations that require professional care. Repeated instruction and practical reinforcement may also help adults retain essential wound-care knowledge. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, families, community organizations, workplaces, and providers of community-based learning programmes. Adults may gain useful knowledge for responding appropriately to minor wounds, while educators may obtain information for improving practical health-related adult education programmes. Families and community organizations may also benefit from having adults who are better informed about basic wound-care practices and the importance of seeking appropriate medical assistance when necessary. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate basic wound-care education through practical demonstrations, clear instructional materials, guided activities, and periodic reinforcement. Adult educators should present wound-care information in simple and accessible ways while emphasizing hygiene, safe practices, and the limits of self-care. Learning programmes should also encourage adults to seek qualified medical attention when wounds are severe, contaminated, or show concerning changes. The study concludes that relevant adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures and strengthen their capacity to make appropriate decisions regarding minor wounds.
