Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Building Energy Efficiency

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can support responsible decisions concerning homes, workplaces, community facilities, and the wider built environment. Building energy efficiency refers to the effective use and management of energy in buildings while maintaining appropriate levels of comfort and functionality. It involves practices and features such as efficient lighting, natural ventilation, insulation, energy-efficient appliances, appropriate building materials, and effective energy management. Adults’ knowledge of building energy efficiency is important because their everyday decisions concerning energy use can influence consumption, household expenditure, environmental conditions, and building performance. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of building energy efficiency, with the purpose of determining whether adult education can improve their understanding of energy-efficient building practices. Adult education can introduce adults to energy-efficiency concepts through discussions, demonstrations, practical activities, observations, and experience-based learning. Learning activities may expose participants to factors that influence energy consumption in buildings, including lighting, ventilation, cooling, appliance use, building orientation, insulation, and material selection. Participants may also learn about simple practices for reducing unnecessary energy use while maintaining suitable indoor conditions. Through demonstrations and examples drawn from homes, workplaces, and community facilities, adult education can make energy-efficiency concepts more accessible and help learners understand how building characteristics and user behaviour affect energy consumption. Adults’ knowledge of building energy efficiency refers to their ability to identify energy-efficient building features, explain practices that reduce unnecessary energy consumption, recognize efficient equipment and materials, and understand the relationship between building design and energy use. Adequate knowledge can help adults make more informed decisions concerning energy consumption and building improvements. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by connecting technical concepts with familiar experiences such as lighting, ventilation, cooling, appliance use, and electricity consumption. Improved knowledge may therefore encourage adults to recognize opportunities for efficient energy use and appreciate the importance of energy-conscious practices within buildings. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of building energy efficiency. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of building energy efficiency. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of building energy efficiency. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of energy-efficient lighting, ventilation, appliances, building materials, energy management, and other practices that can reduce unnecessary energy consumption. The study may also establish that practical demonstrations and examples based on familiar buildings contribute to better understanding of energy-efficiency principles. Such findings would highlight the value of adult education in developing knowledge that can support more responsible energy use within homes, workplaces, and community facilities. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, programme facilitators, and curriculum developers. Relevant Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical energy-efficiency concepts that enable learners to understand how building characteristics and everyday practices influence energy consumption. Facilitators can use demonstrations, photographs, building observations, energy-use examples, and practical activities to explain energy-efficient practices. These approaches can help adults develop greater awareness of efficient lighting, ventilation, appliance use, building materials, and other measures that contribute to improved energy performance. The study will be significant to adult learners, educators, homeowners, community organizations, building users, development practitioners, and other stakeholders interested in sustainable energy use. It will provide useful information on how adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of building energy efficiency and support informed decisions concerning energy use. The study will recommend the inclusion of relevant energy-efficiency concepts in appropriate Adult Education programmes and encourage practical learning activities that connect energy principles with everyday building experiences. It will conclude that strengthening adults’ knowledge through adult education can promote greater awareness of energy-efficient building practices and support more responsible energy use.
