Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Cooperative General Assembly Procedures

Abstract

Cooperative general assembly procedures are the organized processes through which members of a cooperative society come together to discuss major organizational matters, review activities, consider reports, make decisions, and participate in the governance of the society. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and practical understanding that can improve their participation in cooperative activities. Since effective general assemblies require members to understand meeting procedures, agenda items, reporting, discussion, voting, and decision-making processes, adequate knowledge of these procedures is important. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of cooperative general assembly procedures. Adult education can expose participants to general assembly procedures through group discussions, demonstrations, case studies, simulations, cooperative meeting exercises, and participatory activities. These learning experiences can help adults understand meeting preparation, notice and agenda requirements, attendance, presentation of reports, discussion of issues, member participation, voting procedures, recording of decisions, and other relevant assembly activities. Practical exercises can also allow learners to examine realistic general assembly situations and understand the roles of members and leaders during meetings. Such educational experiences may strengthen adults’ knowledge of how cooperative general assemblies are conducted. Adults’ knowledge of cooperative general assembly procedures refers to their ability to identify, explain, and understand the major processes involved in organizing and participating in a cooperative general assembly. This includes knowledge of meeting preparation, agenda management, presentation of reports, discussion and consideration of issues, voting, decision-making, and recording of resolutions. Adequate knowledge can enable members to participate more confidently, understand proceedings, contribute appropriately to discussions, and follow decisions reached during general assemblies. Adult education is expected to improve this knowledge by providing relevant concepts and practical learning opportunities related to cooperative meetings. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults who are members of selected cooperative societies and participants in Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of cooperative general assembly procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of cooperative general assembly procedures. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of cooperative general assembly procedures. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved understanding of meeting preparation, agenda procedures, report presentation, discussion, voting, decision-making, and recording of resolutions. The findings may also indicate that practical and participatory learning approaches help adults connect general assembly concepts with realistic cooperative meeting situations. Such outcomes would demonstrate the contribution of adult education to developing knowledge required for informed participation in cooperative governance. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, cooperative leaders, facilitators, community development practitioners, and organizations involved in cooperative education. Adult Education programmes can incorporate cooperative general assembly procedures into relevant learning activities and use practical methods such as simulations, case studies, role-playing, and mock cooperative meetings. Facilitators can also provide opportunities for participants to practise meeting participation and examine common situations that arise during general assemblies. Strengthening adults’ knowledge in this area may promote more meaningful participation, orderly proceedings, and informed decision-making within cooperative societies. The study is significant because improved knowledge of cooperative general assembly procedures can support effective participation, transparency, accountability, collective decision-making, and responsible cooperative governance. It is recommended that Adult Education and cooperative education programmes provide accessible learning opportunities that explain general assembly procedures and the roles of members during such meetings. Adult educators and cooperative leaders should also employ practical activities that enable members to understand and practise relevant meeting processes. The study concludes that adult education can provide an important foundation for improving adults’ knowledge of cooperative general assembly procedures and strengthening meaningful participation in cooperative governance.
