Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Indigenous Architectural Heritage

Abstract

Indigenous architectural heritage represents an important component of cultural identity, historical knowledge, traditional craftsmanship, and community heritage. It includes knowledge of traditional building designs, locally available construction materials, architectural patterns, building techniques, spatial arrangements, and the cultural meanings associated with traditional structures. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire and strengthen knowledge of cultural heritage through discussions, demonstrations, field activities, community interactions, and practical learning experiences. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of indigenous architectural heritage, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve understanding and appreciation of traditional architectural practices. Adult Education can expose adults to information about indigenous building forms, construction techniques, traditional materials, decorative features, and the cultural purposes of different structures. Through community-based learning, adults can interact with cultural knowledge holders, artisans, builders, and other individuals with experience in traditional architecture. Practical activities such as observation, documentation, demonstrations, heritage visits, and group discussions can further help adults understand how traditional architectural knowledge has been developed, used, and transmitted across generations. Knowledge of indigenous architectural heritage involves understanding the characteristics, materials, techniques, functions, cultural meanings, and historical significance of traditional architectural structures. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify indigenous architectural features, explain the purposes of traditional structures, recognize locally appropriate building techniques, and appreciate the cultural values associated with architectural heritage. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by connecting learning experiences with existing architectural resources and community-based cultural practices. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and cultural learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of indigenous architectural heritage. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of indigenous architectural heritage. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of indigenous architectural heritage. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of traditional architectural designs, construction materials, building techniques, cultural meanings, and historical significance. The study may also establish that practical learning approaches, including heritage-site observation, demonstrations, documentation, and interaction with traditional builders, can enhance adults’ understanding of indigenous architectural knowledge. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, cultural educators, heritage organizations, community development facilitators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may incorporate architectural heritage visits, practical demonstrations, documentation exercises, discussions with traditional artisans, and community-based heritage projects. Such approaches can make cultural learning more practical and encourage adults to recognize the value of traditional architectural resources and the knowledge associated with them. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, traditional builders, artisans, cultural organizations, heritage practitioners, community educators, and stakeholders interested in cultural preservation. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide accessible learning opportunities that expose adults to indigenous architectural knowledge and encourage interaction with cultural knowledge holders. The study concludes that appropriately designed Adult Education can contribute to improved knowledge of indigenous architectural heritage and support the preservation and transmission of traditional architectural knowledge across generations.
