Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Roadside Emergency Procedures
Abstract
Roadside emergency procedures refer to the appropriate actions taken by road users when unexpected incidents such as vehicle breakdowns, road crashes, sudden hazards, or other emergencies occur on or around a roadway. Knowledge of these procedures is important because timely and appropriate responses can help protect individuals, alert relevant emergency services, and reduce further risks. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and safety skills that can be applied in everyday situations. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of roadside emergency procedures, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of appropriate responses during roadside emergencies. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, simulations, visual materials, role-playing, and experience-based learning activities. In relation to roadside emergencies, adults can be introduced to procedures such as moving to a safer location where possible, identifying hazards, communicating the nature and location of an emergency, seeking appropriate assistance, and observing basic safety precautions. Learning activities can expose adults to different roadside emergency scenarios and appropriate response procedures. Such experiences can help learners understand the importance of remaining calm, assessing situations carefully, and taking appropriate actions without creating additional danger. Adults’ knowledge of roadside emergency procedures refers to their understanding of the appropriate steps, precautions, communication practices, and safety considerations required during roadside emergencies. This knowledge enables adults to recognize emergency situations and respond in ways that prioritize personal safety and the safety of others. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing clear explanations, practical demonstrations, scenario-based activities, and opportunities to discuss appropriate responses to different emergencies. Improved knowledge may also help adults distinguish appropriate emergency responses from actions that could increase risk or delay access to assistance. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of roadside emergency procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of roadside emergency procedures. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of roadside emergency procedures. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of appropriate safety precautions, emergency communication, hazard recognition, and procedures for obtaining assistance during roadside incidents. The study may also establish that practical demonstrations, simulations, and scenario-based learning provide effective opportunities for adults to understand and remember appropriate emergency responses. The study will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, road-safety educators, emergency-response trainers, and programme developers. It will emphasize the importance of incorporating practical safety education into relevant adult learning programmes. Facilitators may use demonstrations, emergency scenarios, visual materials, simulations, and guided discussions to help adults develop appropriate knowledge of roadside emergency procedures. Such approaches can make safety education more practical and help learners apply acquired knowledge to realistic situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, road-safety organizations, transportation agencies, community organizations, emergency-response educators, and researchers interested in functional safety education. It will recommend greater integration of practical roadside emergency-response education into relevant adult learning programmes. The study will conclude that effective adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ knowledge of roadside emergency procedures and strengthening their ability to respond appropriately and safely when confronted with emergencies on or around the road.
