Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Arts Learning Programmes
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while arts learning programmes are structured educational activities through which adults develop knowledge and practical abilities in areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, crafts, music, drama, dance, and other artistic practices. Participation in arts learning can provide adults with opportunities for creative expression, skill development, personal enrichment, and meaningful use of leisure time. However, limited access to relevant educational opportunities may affect adults’ involvement in arts learning programmes. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in arts learning programmes. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and practical skills through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences. These may include workshops, community classes, practical demonstrations, lectures, group activities, and skills-based training. Through such learning experiences, adults can develop their ability to acquire new artistic knowledge, practise creative skills, and engage with different forms of artistic expression. Adult education can therefore provide a foundation for greater interest in arts learning by exposing adults to accessible and relevant opportunities for developing creative abilities. Adults’ participation in arts learning programmes refers to their involvement in organized educational activities designed to develop artistic knowledge, skills, and creative abilities. Such participation may include attending art classes, joining music or drama programmes, learning traditional crafts, participating in practical workshops, and engaging in creative demonstrations. Adult education may influence participation by increasing adults’ awareness of learning opportunities, improving their confidence in acquiring new skills, and providing educational experiences that encourage continued involvement in artistic activities. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ exposure to adult education and their participation in arts learning programmes. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in arts learning programmes. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ participation in arts learning programmes. Adults who have greater exposure to relevant educational opportunities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in art classes, practical workshops, music, drama, crafts, and other arts-related learning activities. The findings may also indicate that adult education strengthens adults’ awareness of available arts learning opportunities and encourages them to acquire and practise artistic skills. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by demonstrating the value of incorporating arts-based learning opportunities into adult education programmes. Adult educators can use practical demonstrations, creative workshops, group projects, exhibitions, and performance-based activities to make learning more engaging and relevant. Arts learning can also provide opportunities for adults to develop practical abilities while expressing creativity and exploring their cultural and personal interests. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, arts instructors, community learning centres, cultural organizations, educational institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities to develop creative and practical skills, while educators may gain useful information for designing arts-related learning activities that are suitable for adults. Community and cultural organizations may also use the findings to strengthen accessible arts education initiatives for adult learners. The study will recommend that adult education providers should incorporate suitable arts learning opportunities into their programmes and provide accessible workshops, practical classes, and creative learning activities for adults. Adult educators should employ participatory teaching approaches that allow learners to practise artistic skills and demonstrate their creativity. Adequate instructional materials, trained facilitators, and appropriate learning spaces should also be provided to encourage participation. The study concludes that effective adult education can promote adults’ participation in arts learning programmes by increasing access to learning opportunities, developing relevant skills, and encouraging continued engagement in artistic activities.
