Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Elderly Care Activities

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for improving their personal, family, and community lives, while elderly care activities refer to actions undertaken to support the physical, emotional, social, and everyday needs of older adults. Participation in elderly care activities is important because older adults may require assistance with daily tasks, companionship, healthcare-related support, mobility, and other aspects of everyday living. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate elderly care practices or opportunities to contribute to the care of older persons. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in elderly care activities. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can be applied to family and community responsibilities. Through health education, family education, community learning, and other adult education activities, adults can acquire knowledge about ageing, the needs of older persons, communication with elderly individuals, basic caregiving responsibilities, and appropriate ways of providing support. These learning experiences can also help adults understand the importance of respecting older persons and responding appropriately to their physical, emotional, and social needs. Adults’ participation in elderly care activities refers to the extent to which adults become involved in appropriate activities aimed at supporting and caring for older persons. Such activities may include assisting with daily tasks, providing companionship, helping older persons access appropriate services, supporting mobility, accompanying them to appointments, and participating in organized elderly care programmes. Adult education may influence participation by providing adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills that increase their understanding of elderly care responsibilities and encourage appropriate involvement. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ participation in elderly care activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in elderly care activities. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in elderly care activities. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater understanding of elderly care needs and participate more actively in appropriate caregiving and support activities. The findings may also identify areas where adults require additional educational opportunities to improve their knowledge and ability to provide suitable support to older persons. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate relevant ageing and elderly care content into appropriate adult education programmes. Practical discussions, demonstrations, case studies, and community-based learning activities can help adults understand the needs of older persons and develop appropriate skills for providing support. Such learning approaches can connect adult education with important family and community responsibilities. The study will be significant to adult learners, families, adult educators, caregivers, community organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge of ageing and appropriate elderly care practices, while families may benefit from greater availability of adults who understand how to provide suitable support to older persons. Adult educators and community organizations may also use the findings to develop relevant educational programmes that address the care needs of ageing populations. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate education on ageing and elderly care into relevant learning activities. Adult educators should use practical teaching approaches to help adults understand the needs of older persons and develop appropriate caregiving and support skills. Community organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to create educational opportunities that encourage responsible involvement in elderly care activities. The study concludes that adult education can contribute to increased participation in elderly care activities by equipping adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and understanding of the needs of older persons.
