Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Museum-Based Learning

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, and community development, while museum-based learning refers to educational experiences that take place through museums, exhibitions, collections, artefacts, guided tours, demonstrations, and other museum resources. Museum-based learning can provide adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through direct engagement with cultural, historical, scientific, and artistic materials. However, some adults may have limited awareness of the educational value of museums or limited opportunities to engage with museum learning activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in museum-based learning. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to develop knowledge and learning habits that can be applied beyond conventional classroom environments. Through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences, adults can be introduced to different sources of knowledge, including museums and cultural institutions. Adult education programmes can also encourage learners to explore exhibitions, historical objects, artistic collections, scientific displays, and educational programmes offered by museums, thereby creating opportunities for continued learning outside traditional learning centres. Participation in museum-based learning refers to the extent to which adults engage in educational activities provided through museums and their resources. Such participation may include visiting museums for educational purposes, attending exhibitions, joining guided tours, examining artefacts, participating in workshops, and using museum educational materials. Adult education may influence participation by increasing adults’ awareness of museums as learning environments and developing their interest and willingness to use museum resources for acquiring knowledge. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to adult education and their participation in museum-based learning. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in museum-based learning. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in museum-based learning. Adults with greater exposure to adult education are expected to show greater awareness of museums as sources of knowledge and demonstrate higher levels of participation in museum visits, exhibitions, guided learning activities, workshops, and other educational programmes. The findings may also indicate that adult education can encourage adults to view museums as complementary learning environments. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate museum visits, exhibition-based activities, object-based learning, and discussions of museum collections into appropriate adult learning programmes. Such approaches can provide learners with practical and experiential learning opportunities while connecting classroom knowledge with historical, cultural, artistic, and scientific resources available within museums. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, museum educators, museum administrators, cultural institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities to acquire knowledge through direct interaction with museum resources. Adult educators and museum educators may also gain useful information for developing collaborative educational programmes, while museum administrators and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen strategies for attracting adults to museum-based educational activities. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate museum-based learning activities into their instructional plans. Adult educators should encourage learners to visit museums, participate in guided tours, attend exhibitions, and engage with educational programmes offered by museums. Museums should also develop accessible learning activities that respond to the interests and educational needs of adult learners. The study concludes that adult education can contribute to increased participation in museum-based learning by creating greater awareness of museums as valuable environments for adult learning.
