Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Circular Economy Principles

Abstract

Circular economy principles refer to approaches that promote the efficient use of resources by reducing waste, extending the useful life of products and materials, and encouraging reuse, repair, recovery, and recycling. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and practical understanding that can influence how they perceive and respond to resource-use challenges. As increasing consumption and waste generation create environmental and economic concerns, understanding circular economy principles has become important for responsible household, workplace, and community practices. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of circular economy principles. Adult Education can expose learners to the major concepts and practices associated with the circular economy, including resource efficiency, waste prevention, reuse, repair, refurbishment, recycling, recovery, and responsible consumption. Through structured learning activities, adults can examine how products and materials can remain useful for longer periods rather than being discarded after limited use. Such educational experiences can help learners connect circular economy ideas with practical activities in their homes, workplaces, businesses, and communities. Adults’ understanding of circular economy principles involves their ability to explain the meaning, importance, and practical application of approaches that support more sustainable resource use. Adults who acquire relevant knowledge may be better able to distinguish circular practices from conventional patterns of consumption and disposal. Improved understanding may also enable them to recognize opportunities for reducing unnecessary waste, extending product use, reusing materials, and supporting resource recovery within their everyday environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of circular economy principles. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of circular economy principles. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of circular economy principles. It is anticipated that adults who participate in relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of resource efficiency, waste prevention, reuse, repair, recycling, and other circular approaches. The study may also reveal that practical learning experiences enhance adults’ ability to relate circular economy concepts to everyday consumption and resource-management practices. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Integrating circular economy concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine practical examples of resource reuse, waste reduction, repair, recycling, and responsible consumption. Such activities may strengthen adults’ understanding of how individual and community practices can contribute to more efficient use of resources and encourage the application of circular principles in everyday life. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, communities, Adult Education practitioners, environmental organisations, businesses, and policymakers interested in sustainable resource use. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities on circular economy principles, resource efficiency, waste prevention, reuse, repair, recycling, and responsible consumption. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of circular economy principles and contribute to greater awareness of sustainable approaches to resource use and waste management.
