Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Climate-Induced Migration

Abstract

Climate education refers to the process of equipping individuals with knowledge and awareness about climate change, its effects, risks, and appropriate responses, while understanding of climate-resilient housing concerns adults’ knowledge of housing features, practices, and approaches that can help buildings withstand or adapt to climate-related stresses. As changing environmental conditions increasingly affect housing safety, comfort, and sustainability, adults need adequate knowledge to understand how residential structures can be designed, maintained, and improved to respond to climate-related challenges. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of climate education on adults’ understanding of climate-resilient housing. Climate education can expose adults to knowledge about climate-related hazards, housing vulnerability, resilient building practices, energy efficiency, ventilation, drainage, heat reduction, water management, and appropriate maintenance practices. Through relevant learning activities, adults can develop an understanding of how housing characteristics may influence household exposure to environmental risks. Such education can also help learners recognize practical features that contribute to safer, more adaptable, and environmentally responsible residential buildings. Understanding of climate-resilient housing involves the ability of adults to explain and recognize housing features and practices that improve resilience to climate-related conditions. Adults with adequate climate knowledge may be better positioned to understand the importance of appropriate building materials, effective drainage, natural ventilation, heat management, water conservation, and other resilience-oriented housing practices. Improved understanding can help adults make more informed decisions concerning household improvements, housing maintenance, and responses to climate-related environmental challenges. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of climate-resilient housing. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of climate education on adults’ understanding of climate-resilient housing. The study is expected to establish that climate education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of climate-resilient housing. It is anticipated that adults who receive relevant climate education will demonstrate improved knowledge of housing characteristics and practices that can reduce vulnerability to climate-related conditions. The findings may also indicate that practical climate education strengthens adults’ ability to recognize resilience-oriented housing features and appreciate their importance for household safety, comfort, and environmental sustainability. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating climate-resilient housing concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine housing conditions, discuss climate-related housing challenges, identify resilience features, and consider practical improvement measures. Such learning activities may strengthen the connection between climate knowledge and everyday housing decisions while encouraging greater awareness of sustainable and resilient residential practices. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, Adult Education practitioners, housing stakeholders, environmental organisations, and policymakers interested in climate resilience and sustainable living. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical climate education covering resilient housing principles, climate-related housing risks, appropriate building practices, energy efficiency, ventilation, drainage, and household preparedness. The study concludes that effective climate education can improve adults’ understanding of climate-resilient housing and support more informed decisions toward safer and more adaptable residential environments.
