Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Community Innovation Hubs

Abstract

Adult Education can contribute to adults’ awareness of emerging community-based structures that support creativity, entrepreneurship, skills development, collaboration, and local problem-solving. Community Innovation Hubs are spaces or platforms that bring people together to access resources, knowledge, technology, mentorship, networking, and opportunities for developing innovative ideas and practical solutions. However, some adults may have limited understanding of the purpose, functions, services, and potential benefits of these hubs. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of Community Innovation Hubs and determine whether educational exposure can improve their awareness of these community-based innovation platforms. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant information about the nature and functions of Community Innovation Hubs. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can be introduced to the services commonly associated with innovation hubs, including access to learning resources, digital facilities, collaborative spaces, mentorship, networking, entrepreneurship support, and opportunities for developing and testing ideas. Education can also help learners understand how innovation hubs connect individuals with knowledge, skills, resources, and other people who can support the development of community-oriented initiatives. Adults’ understanding of Community Innovation Hubs refers to their ability to explain the concept, identify the major functions and services of such hubs, recognize their potential users, and understand how they can support learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community development. Adequate understanding can enable adults to recognize relevant opportunities and determine how innovation hubs may contribute to their personal, professional, or community-related goals. Adult Education can strengthen this understanding through structured information, practical discussions, case examples, demonstrations, and community-based learning activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of Community Innovation Hubs. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of Community Innovation Hubs. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of Community Innovation Hubs. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater awareness of the purpose, services, resources, participation opportunities, and community-development functions of innovation hubs. The study may further establish that educational exposure enables adults to better recognize how these hubs can provide access to knowledge, technology, collaboration, mentorship, and opportunities for developing innovative ideas. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, community development facilitators, and innovation-support organisations. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical learning activities that introduce adults to community innovation structures and the opportunities they provide. Facilitators can use case studies, hub-orientation activities, collaborative projects, demonstrations, and community-based learning to improve learners’ understanding. Such approaches can strengthen the connection between Adult Education, community innovation, skills development, and local development initiatives. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community development organisations, innovation-support organisations, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of education to adults’ understanding of Community Innovation Hubs. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide accessible information about innovation hubs, their services, participation procedures, and opportunities for learning and collaboration. The study concludes that Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of Community Innovation Hubs and support more informed participation in community-based innovation and development activities.
