Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Community Oral Traditions
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge about the cultural experiences, practices, and forms of knowledge that exist within their communities. Community oral traditions refer to knowledge and cultural expressions transmitted verbally from one generation to another through storytelling, proverbs, songs, legends, historical narratives, folktales, and other forms of oral communication. Limited understanding of community oral traditions may contribute to the gradual loss of valuable cultural knowledge and weaken adults’ ability to recognize their significance. The study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of community oral traditions. Adult education can expose learners to community oral traditions through storytelling sessions, oral history activities, group discussions, cultural demonstrations, interviews with community elders, and community-based learning. These learning experiences can introduce adults to the origins, meanings, purposes, and methods of transmitting oral traditions. By connecting learning activities with community experiences, adult education can provide adults with opportunities to examine oral traditions as sources of cultural knowledge, historical information, moral instruction, and community identity. Understanding community oral traditions involves recognizing their different forms, meanings, sources, methods of transmission, and significance within community life. Adults with adequate understanding may be better able to identify the cultural information contained in oral narratives and appreciate how such traditions contribute to the transmission of knowledge between generations. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by providing structured opportunities for learners to listen to, discuss, interpret, and critically examine different forms of community oral traditions. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to adult education and their understanding of community oral traditions. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of community oral traditions. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of storytelling, proverbs, songs, legends, folktales, historical narratives, and other forms of oral tradition. The study is also expected to indicate that adult education can improve adults’ understanding of the cultural and historical meanings associated with oral traditions and strengthen their recognition of oral traditions as valuable sources of community knowledge. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the importance of incorporating community-based cultural knowledge into appropriate learning activities. Adult educators may use storytelling, oral history projects, interviews, group discussions, and community-based activities to expose learners to different forms of oral traditions. These approaches can make adult learning more culturally relevant and enable learners to connect educational experiences with knowledge transmitted within their communities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community elders, cultural knowledge holders, cultural organizations, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved understanding of community oral traditions and their cultural significance. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing culturally responsive learning activities, while community elders and knowledge holders may have greater opportunities to share valuable oral knowledge. Cultural organizations and programme planners may also use the findings to strengthen initiatives aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of community-based oral traditions. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide appropriate opportunities for adults to learn about community oral traditions through participatory and community-based learning methods. Adult educators should incorporate storytelling, oral history, interviews with knowledgeable community members, proverbs, songs, and other relevant forms of oral tradition into suitable learning activities. Learners should also be encouraged to examine oral traditions critically and understand their cultural context rather than accepting every traditional claim as factual. It is concluded that adult education can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ understanding of community oral traditions and strengthening their appreciation of community-based cultural knowledge.
