Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Loneliness among Older Adults
Abstract
Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and awareness about social issues affecting individuals at different stages of life. Understanding of loneliness among older adults refers to knowledge of the meaning, contributing factors, signs, and social implications of experiencing loneliness in later life. Although older adults may maintain social relationships, changes in family structures, reduced social interaction, retirement, bereavement, and limited community participation can contribute to experiences of loneliness. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of loneliness among older adults, with the purpose of determining whether educational exposure can improve adults’ knowledge of the nature and implications of loneliness in later life. Adult Education can expose learners to important concepts relating to loneliness among older adults, including social isolation, emotional connection, companionship, social participation, intergenerational relationships, and community support. Through structured learning experiences, adults can explore factors that may contribute to loneliness and examine how changes in social relationships can influence older people’s everyday experiences. Discussions, case studies, storytelling, group activities, and community-based learning can help participants distinguish loneliness from simply being alone and understand that individuals may experience loneliness differently. Such education can also promote greater awareness of the importance of meaningful social relationships in later life. Understanding loneliness among older adults is important because adequate knowledge can help adults recognize situations in which older people may experience reduced social connection and appreciate the importance of supportive relationships. Adults with better understanding may be more able to identify social circumstances that can contribute to loneliness and recognize the value of companionship, communication, participation, and inclusion. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by providing opportunities to examine real-life situations involving older people and discuss appropriate forms of social support. Improved knowledge can encourage adults to view loneliness as an important social concern rather than simply an unavoidable consequence of ageing. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of loneliness among older adults. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of loneliness among older adults. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of loneliness among older adults. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure may demonstrate improved knowledge of the meaning, contributing factors, manifestations, and social implications of loneliness in later life. The study is also expected to indicate that practical learning experiences can improve adults’ ability to recognize circumstances associated with reduced social connection and appreciate the importance of meaningful interaction and community inclusion for older people. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, families, and facilitators of programmes involving older adults. Incorporating ageing and social-relationship concepts into adult learning can provide participants with practical knowledge about loneliness and the social experiences of older people. Activities such as case discussions, intergenerational storytelling, community-based projects, group reflection, and analysis of everyday social situations can make learning more practical and encourage adults to develop greater awareness of the social needs of older adults. Such approaches may also strengthen intergenerational understanding and social inclusion. The study will be significant to adult learners, older adults, families, community leaders, Adult Education practitioners, and community organizations by providing insight into the role of education in improving understanding of loneliness in later life. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate relevant content on ageing, social connection, companionship, social participation, and community inclusion. Intergenerational learning activities may also be encouraged to provide adults with opportunities to interact with and learn from older people. The study will conclude that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of loneliness among older adults and contribute to greater awareness of the importance of meaningful social connections in later life.
