Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Professional Boundaries

Abstract

Professional boundaries refer to the appropriate limits that guide interactions, communication, responsibilities, and relationships between individuals within professional settings. Adults’ understanding of professional boundaries involves recognizing acceptable workplace interactions, respecting personal and professional limits, maintaining appropriate communication, and distinguishing professional relationships from inappropriate conduct. Limited understanding of professional boundaries may contribute to misunderstandings, inappropriate interactions, and difficulties in maintaining healthy workplace relationships. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of professional boundaries. Adult education can provide adults with knowledge about professional expectations through structured lessons, discussions, case studies, role-play, workplace scenarios, and guided reflection. Learners can be exposed to situations involving communication, personal space, confidentiality, authority, workplace relationships, and appropriate interactions with colleagues and clients. These educational approaches can help adults examine different situations and understand the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries in professional environments. Adults’ understanding of professional boundaries involves recognizing the limits that should guide workplace relationships and interactions, identifying appropriate and inappropriate conduct, and understanding the importance of respecting professional roles and responsibilities. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by allowing learners to examine realistic workplace situations and discuss appropriate responses. Improved understanding may help adults interact more appropriately with colleagues, supervisors, clients, and other individuals within professional settings. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and scenario-based assessment items designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ understanding of professional boundaries. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of professional boundaries. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of appropriate workplace interactions, professional roles, communication limits, and acceptable conduct. The findings may also indicate that case studies and realistic workplace scenarios are useful for helping adults understand how professional boundaries should be maintained in different situations. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of professional behaviour within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical workplace scenarios, role-play, discussions, and case analysis into lessons on professional conduct. These approaches can enable learners to examine different interactions and develop practical judgement about appropriate professional boundaries. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, employees, employers, workplace learning providers, and organisations. Adults may develop greater awareness of appropriate professional relationships and become better equipped to recognize situations in which professional boundaries may be unclear or inappropriate. Educators may gain useful strategies for teaching professional conduct, while organisations may benefit from employees having a clearer understanding of appropriate workplace interactions. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical lessons on professional boundaries using realistic workplace examples. Adult educators should employ case studies, role-play, guided discussions, and scenario-based exercises to strengthen learners’ understanding. Organisations should also provide clear guidelines on professional interactions and reinforce them through workplace education. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ understanding of professional boundaries when instruction is practical, clear, and relevant to workplace experiences.
