Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Responsible Fishing Practices
Abstract
Responsible fishing practices refer to methods and behaviours that support the sustainable harvesting of fish while reducing unnecessary damage to aquatic ecosystems and maintaining fish resources for future use. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge about sustainable resource use and develop awareness of practices that promote responsible fishing. As fishing activities can influence aquatic resources, livelihoods, food availability, and environmental conditions, adults involved in or exposed to fishing activities need adequate knowledge of responsible practices. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of responsible fishing practices. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts such as sustainable fishing, appropriate fishing methods, fishing regulations, responsible use of fishing equipment, protection of breeding areas, avoidance of destructive fishing methods, and conservation of aquatic resources. Through structured learning activities, adults can examine how fishing practices influence fish populations and aquatic environments. Such education can also help learners understand the importance of observing relevant regulations, protecting aquatic habitats, and adopting practices that support the continued availability of fish resources. Adults’ understanding of responsible fishing practices involves their ability to explain, identify, and distinguish appropriate fishing practices from activities that may contribute to resource depletion or environmental damage. Adults with relevant knowledge may be better positioned to recognize sustainable harvesting practices, understand the importance of protecting aquatic habitats, and appreciate the need to avoid destructive methods. Improved understanding can therefore support more informed attitudes toward the responsible use and conservation of aquatic resources. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of responsible fishing practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of responsible fishing practices. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of responsible fishing practices. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of sustainable fishing methods, resource conservation, fishing regulations, habitat protection, and responsible harvesting practices. The study may also reveal that practical learning experiences strengthen adults’ ability to distinguish responsible fishing practices from activities that may negatively affect aquatic resources. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating responsible fishing concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine fishing practices, discuss aquatic-resource conservation, identify responsible harvesting methods, and consider the consequences of destructive fishing activities. Such activities may strengthen adults’ understanding of sustainable fishing and encourage greater awareness of the relationship between fishing practices, aquatic resources, and long-term livelihood opportunities. The study will be significant to adult learners, fishing communities, Adult Education practitioners, fisheries stakeholders, community organisations, environmental groups, and policymakers concerned with aquatic-resource conservation. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities covering sustainable fishing, responsible harvesting, fishing regulations, aquatic habitat protection, resource conservation, and appropriate fishing methods. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of responsible fishing practices and contribute to more informed approaches to the sustainable use and conservation of aquatic resources.
