Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Use of Community-Based Social Services
Abstract
Adult education equips adults with knowledge, skills, and information that can improve their ability to identify and make use of services available within their communities. Community-based social services provide support to individuals and households through services such as family support, counselling, welfare assistance, educational support, and other social care programmes. However, some adults may underuse these services because of inadequate awareness, limited information, or difficulties in understanding how and where to obtain available support. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ use of community-based social services, with the purpose of determining whether adult education influences adults’ awareness and utilisation of available social services. Adult education involves formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical information. Through literacy programmes, community workshops, group discussions, awareness sessions, and practical learning activities, adults can develop the ability to understand information, identify available services, and make informed choices. These learning experiences may improve adults’ awareness of community-based social services and increase their confidence in seeking assistance when necessary. The use of community-based social services refers to adults’ ability and willingness to identify, access, and utilise social services provided within their communities. Such services may include counselling, family support, welfare assistance, social care, educational support, and other community-based programmes. Adult education may influence their use by improving adults’ understanding of available services, eligibility requirements, service procedures, and potential benefits. Adults who possess relevant knowledge and information skills may therefore be better positioned to make appropriate use of community-based social services. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and adult community members who have access to community-based social services in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ use of community-based social services. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ use of community-based social services. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate better awareness of available social services and greater ability to identify and utilise services relevant to their needs. The study may further establish that functional learning experiences help adults understand service information and develop the confidence required to seek appropriate assistance. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical information about community-based social services into adult learning programmes. Lessons involving service identification, interpretation of service information, understanding procedures, and practical problem-solving activities may help adults develop the knowledge and skills needed to make effective use of available social services. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community-based social service providers, social development organisations, community organisations, and educational planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved awareness and utilisation of relevant social services, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing learning programmes that address practical community needs. Social service providers and community organisations may also use the findings to strengthen strategies for informing adults about available services. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should include practical learning activities that increase adults’ awareness of community-based social services and improve their ability to use them. Social service providers should provide clear and accessible information about available services, while adult educators and community organisations should collaborate to connect adults with relevant support programmes. The study will conclude that adult education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ use of community-based social services.
