Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Community Mediation Activities
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies for addressing personal, social, and community needs, while community mediation activities involve structured efforts to help individuals or groups resolve disagreements through dialogue, negotiation, and peaceful settlement. Effective mediation can promote understanding, reduce prolonged disputes, and strengthen peaceful relationships within communities. However, limited knowledge of communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution approaches may affect adults’ ability to contribute effectively to mediation activities. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on participation in community mediation activities. Adult education programmes may include literacy education, civic learning, workshops, skills training, discussion groups, and other structured learning activities. Through these programmes, adults can develop communication, critical thinking, listening, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Such knowledge and skills may improve their ability to understand different viewpoints, communicate respectfully, and contribute constructively when disagreements arise within their communities. Participation in community mediation activities involves attending mediation sessions, assisting in dialogue between disputing parties, supporting peaceful negotiation, providing relevant information, and contributing to efforts aimed at resolving community disagreements. Adults who possess appropriate communication and conflict-resolution knowledge may be better prepared to contribute meaningfully to mediation processes. Adult education may therefore influence participation by equipping adults with skills that support constructive communication and peaceful dispute resolution. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community mediation activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on participation in community mediation activities. Adults with greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate stronger willingness and ability to contribute to mediation processes. The study may further establish that educational exposure improves adults’ understanding of communication, negotiation, listening, and peaceful dispute-resolution practices that are relevant to community mediation. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because adult education can provide practical knowledge and skills that adults can apply to real-life social situations. Learning activities that develop communication, critical thinking, listening, and negotiation skills may prepare adults to respond constructively to disagreements. Adult education programmes can therefore extend learning beyond the classroom by connecting educational experiences with peaceful community relationships. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, community members, adult education practitioners, community leaders, mediation practitioners, education planners, and researchers. Adults may gain useful skills for contributing to peaceful dispute-resolution processes, while community leaders may benefit from greater availability of knowledgeable community members who can support mediation activities. Adult education practitioners and education planners may also use the findings to strengthen programmes that address practical community needs. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical learning activities on communication, active listening, negotiation, dialogue, and peaceful conflict resolution. Community-based learning programmes should also create opportunities for adults to develop and apply these skills in appropriate mediation settings. It is concluded that effective adult education can equip adults with knowledge and competencies that encourage meaningful participation in community mediation activities.
