Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Cultural Heritage Activities
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to develop adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and understanding, while participation in cultural heritage activities involves adults’ involvement in activities that preserve, promote, and transmit the traditions, values, customs, arts, crafts, languages, historical practices, and cultural expressions of their communities. Cultural heritage activities are important for maintaining cultural identity and transmitting valuable traditions across generations. However, declining interest and limited knowledge of cultural practices may reduce adults’ involvement in heritage-related activities. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on participation in cultural heritage activities. Adult education can provide learning experiences that expose adults to local history, traditional knowledge, indigenous practices, cultural values, and community heritage. Through literacy education, community learning, cultural education, discussion sessions, practical activities, and other forms of adult learning, participants can acquire knowledge about the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Such educational experiences may increase adults’ awareness of cultural practices and encourage them to value and become involved in activities that promote their cultural heritage. Participation in cultural heritage activities may include attending cultural festivals, learning traditional crafts, preserving indigenous stories, participating in traditional ceremonies, supporting local arts, learning indigenous languages, and contributing to the documentation or transmission of cultural knowledge. Adult education may strengthen adults’ understanding of the cultural significance of these activities and encourage active involvement. Increased participation can support the preservation of cultural knowledge and provide opportunities for adults to pass cultural values and practices to younger generations. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in cultural heritage activities. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in cultural heritage activities. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate higher awareness of cultural heritage, stronger appreciation of traditional practices, and greater involvement in cultural heritage activities than adults with limited educational exposure. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by demonstrating the value of incorporating cultural knowledge and heritage-related activities into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may use discussions, storytelling, practical demonstrations, community-based learning, and cultural projects to connect learning with local heritage. Such approaches may make adult education more relevant to learners’ cultural experiences while encouraging the preservation and transmission of cultural knowledge. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, cultural organizations, community leaders, traditional institutions, policymakers, and community development practitioners. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing culturally relevant learning activities, while adult learners may benefit from increased knowledge and appreciation of their cultural heritage. Cultural organizations and community leaders may also use the findings to encourage greater involvement of adults in heritage preservation activities. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate relevant cultural heritage content and practical cultural activities into their learning programmes. Adult educators should encourage learners to document, discuss, and participate in local cultural practices, while community organizations should create opportunities for adults to engage in heritage-related activities. Collaboration between adult education providers and cultural institutions should also be strengthened. The study will conclude that effective adult education can contribute to greater participation in cultural heritage activities and support the preservation and transmission of valuable cultural knowledge.
