Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Local History Learning Activities
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while local history learning activities are educational experiences that enable individuals to learn about the historical events, people, places, traditions, and developments associated with their immediate communities. Participation in local history learning can strengthen adults’ understanding of their communities and provide knowledge of how past events have influenced present social life. However, limited exposure to relevant educational opportunities may reduce adults’ involvement in activities through which local history is learned. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on participation in local history learning activities. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to learn through formal, non-formal, and informal educational experiences. These may include literacy classes, community-based learning, workshops, lectures, discussions, educational visits, and practical learning activities. Through such opportunities, adults can develop knowledge acquisition, interpretation, communication, and learning skills that may encourage them to explore information about their local communities. Adult education can therefore provide a foundation for greater interest in local history by connecting learning experiences with the social and historical environment in which adults live. Participation in local history learning activities refers to adults’ involvement in educational experiences focused on understanding the history of their communities. Such activities may include attending local history lectures, visiting historical locations, listening to community history presentations, participating in oral history activities, examining historical materials, and engaging in discussions about past community events. Adult education may influence participation by improving adults’ awareness of available learning opportunities and developing their interest and capacity to engage with historical information. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ exposure to adult education and their participation in local history learning activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on participation in local history learning activities. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ participation in local history learning activities. Adults with greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate higher involvement in activities such as historical discussions, educational visits, oral history sessions, and examination of local historical materials. The findings may further indicate that adult education enhances adults’ interest in acquiring historical knowledge and encourages them to seek opportunities for learning about the history of their communities. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by demonstrating the value of incorporating locally relevant historical content into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may use community stories, historical documents, local sites, interviews, discussions, and educational visits as learning resources. These approaches can make adult learning more meaningful by connecting educational experiences with the historical environment familiar to learners and encouraging active engagement with local knowledge. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, local historians, cultural organizations, educational institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may gain greater opportunities to understand the historical development of their communities, while adult educators may obtain useful information for designing locally relevant learning activities. Community and cultural organizations may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that provide adults with opportunities to learn about local history. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate local history content and provide practical opportunities for adults to engage in local history learning activities. Adult educators should use community-based resources, oral history, historical discussions, educational visits, and locally available historical materials to support learning. Collaboration between adult education providers, community organizations, and local history resource persons should also be encouraged. The study concludes that effective adult education can promote greater participation in local history learning activities by developing adults’ awareness, interest, and capacity to engage with historical knowledge.
