Effect of Adult Education on Social Adjustment among Newly Relocated Adults

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, and practical development, while social adjustment refers to the ability of individuals to adapt positively to new social environments, establish relationships, communicate effectively, and participate appropriately in their communities. Social adjustment can be particularly important for adults who relocate to unfamiliar communities because they may need to understand new social expectations, develop relationships, and become comfortable within their new environment. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on social adjustment among newly relocated adults. Adult education provides learning opportunities through literacy programmes, community education, vocational training, continuing education, orientation activities, and other structured learning experiences. These programmes can expose adults to new knowledge, communication skills, social interaction, problem-solving activities, and practical information relevant to their environments. Through classroom discussions, group activities, collaborative learning, and community-based learning experiences, adult education can provide opportunities for adults to develop skills that support adaptation to changing social circumstances. Social adjustment among newly relocated adults involves developing positive relationships, communicating with other community members, understanding local social practices, participating appropriately in social settings, and managing the challenges associated with adapting to a new environment. Newly relocated adults may encounter difficulties establishing social connections and becoming familiar with unfamiliar community practices. Participation in adult education may therefore influence social adjustment by providing opportunities for learning, interaction, communication, and engagement with other adults. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise newly relocated adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a social adjustment assessment designed to measure participation in adult education and social adjustment among the respondents. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on social adjustment among newly relocated adults. It is anticipated that adults who participate in adult education programmes will demonstrate greater ability to communicate with others, establish social relationships, understand their new environment, and interact appropriately within the community. The study may also establish that adult education provides useful learning and interaction opportunities that can support adults during the process of adapting to a new social environment. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators should develop learning activities that encourage communication, cooperation, group interaction, and practical engagement among learners. Orientation discussions, group learning, community-based activities, role-play, and collaborative tasks can provide newly relocated adults with opportunities to practise social interaction and become familiar with their new environment. Such approaches can make adult education more responsive to the social adjustment needs of relocated adults. The study will be beneficial to newly relocated adults, adult educators, adult education institutions, community organizations, social development practitioners, and policymakers. Newly relocated adults may benefit from improved social interaction and greater ability to adapt to unfamiliar environments. Adult educators and programme administrators may gain useful information for developing programmes that support adults experiencing major changes in their social environments, while community organizations and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen inclusive adult education initiatives. The study recommends that adult education programmes for newly relocated adults should include activities that promote communication, social interaction, community orientation, and practical adaptation skills. Adult educators should use participatory teaching methods that encourage learners to interact and share experiences in supportive learning environments. Community organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to create opportunities for newly relocated adults to become familiar with their new communities. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to improved social adjustment among newly relocated adults.
