Effect of Adult Education on the Preservation of Indigenous Cultural Practices

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning activities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, values, and competencies for personal, social, and cultural development, while preservation of indigenous cultural practices refers to the continued protection, transmission, and practice of traditional knowledge, customs, values, languages, arts, beliefs, skills, and ways of life. The preservation of indigenous cultural practices is important for maintaining cultural identity and ensuring that valuable traditions are passed from one generation to another. However, some indigenous cultural practices are gradually declining because of modernization, changing lifestyles, and reduced transmission of traditional knowledge. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on the preservation of indigenous cultural practices. Adult education can provide learning opportunities through community education, cultural education, literacy programmes, workshops, discussions, storytelling activities, practical demonstrations, and other forms of continuing learning. Such programmes can provide adults with opportunities to document, discuss, teach, and practise aspects of their cultural heritage. Adult education can also create learning environments where traditional knowledge and cultural experiences are shared between older and younger members of communities. The preservation of indigenous cultural practices involves maintaining traditional languages, crafts, music, dances, festivals, storytelling, indigenous knowledge, customs, values, and other culturally significant practices. Adults often play an important role in transmitting these practices through teaching, demonstration, participation, and everyday interaction. Adult education may therefore influence cultural preservation by creating opportunities for adults to learn, practise, document, and transmit indigenous cultural knowledge and practices. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a cultural practices assessment designed to measure participation in adult education and the preservation of indigenous cultural practices. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on the preservation of indigenous cultural practices. It is anticipated that adults who participate in relevant adult education programmes will demonstrate greater knowledge, practice, and transmission of indigenous cultural traditions. The study may also establish that structured learning activities can provide opportunities for adults to strengthen their understanding of cultural heritage and contribute to its continued preservation. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators should incorporate culturally relevant materials, traditional knowledge, storytelling, practical demonstrations, and community-based learning activities into appropriate adult education programmes. Learners can be encouraged to document cultural practices, interact with knowledgeable community members, and participate in activities that promote the continued use of indigenous knowledge. This can make adult education more responsive to cultural preservation needs. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, cultural organizations, community leaders, traditional knowledge holders, educational institutions, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from greater awareness and appreciation of their cultural heritage, while educators may gain useful information for developing culturally responsive learning programmes. Cultural organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that support the documentation, transmission, and preservation of indigenous cultural practices. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant indigenous cultural knowledge and practices into learning activities where appropriate. Adult educators should encourage storytelling, cultural demonstrations, documentation activities, and intergenerational learning to support the transmission of cultural knowledge. Community organizations and cultural institutions should also collaborate with adult education providers to develop programmes that promote cultural preservation. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to the continued preservation of indigenous cultural practices.
