Effect of Adult Education Programmes on Decision-Making Ability among Community Members

Abstract

Adult education programmes are organized learning activities designed to provide adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies that support personal, social, and practical development, while decision-making ability refers to the capacity of individuals to identify problems, consider available information, evaluate alternatives, and select appropriate courses of action. Effective decision-making is important for helping community members respond appropriately to personal, household, economic, and community-related situations. However, some adults may experience difficulties making informed decisions because of limited knowledge, inadequate access to relevant information, and insufficient opportunities for continuing education. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education programmes on decision-making ability among community members. Adult education programmes provide learning opportunities through literacy education, vocational training, continuing education, civic education, health education, financial education, and other structured learning activities. These programmes expose adult learners to relevant information, practical knowledge, problem-solving activities, discussions, and experiences that can be applied to everyday situations. Through these learning processes, adults can develop their ability to understand information, assess situations, and apply acquired knowledge when addressing practical challenges. Decision-making ability among community members involves the capacity to identify available choices, examine relevant information, compare possible alternatives, consider likely consequences, and make appropriate decisions. Community members make decisions concerning household matters, financial activities, education, employment, health, business, and other aspects of everyday life. Adult education programmes may therefore influence decision-making ability by providing adults with knowledge and practical learning experiences that can support more informed choices. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise community members participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a decision-making assessment designed to measure participation in adult education programmes and decision-making ability among the respondents. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education programmes have a positive effect on decision-making ability among community members. It is anticipated that community members who participate in adult education programmes will demonstrate improved ability to understand relevant information, evaluate alternatives, and make appropriate decisions. The study may also establish that exposure to structured learning activities can strengthen adults' practical reasoning and ability to apply knowledge when dealing with everyday situations. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators should incorporate problem-solving activities, practical discussions, case-based exercises, and real-life decision-making situations into adult education programmes. These approaches can provide learners with opportunities to examine different situations, evaluate alternatives, and apply acquired knowledge to practical problems. Such learning experiences can make adult education more relevant to the everyday decision-making needs of community members. The study will be beneficial to community members, adult educators, adult education institutions, community organizations, programme developers, and policymakers. Community members may benefit from improved decision-making skills that can support more informed choices in different areas of life. Adult educators and programme developers may gain useful information for improving the content and delivery of adult education programmes, while policymakers and community organizations may use the findings to strengthen adult learning initiatives that promote practical decision-making skills. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical learning activities that develop learners' ability to analyze information, compare alternatives, solve problems, and make appropriate decisions. Adult educators should use learner-centred approaches, practical examples, group discussions, and problem-solving exercises that reflect real-life situations. Adult education institutions should also ensure that programme content addresses the practical information needs of community members. The study concludes that effective adult education programmes can contribute to improved decision-making ability among community members.
