Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Welding Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, employment opportunities, and participation in productive activities. Basic welding involves the use of tools, equipment, materials, joining procedures, and safety practices required to carry out simple welding operations effectively. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of basic welding techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic welding techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In basic welding, adults can be introduced to welding tools and equipment, identification of welding materials, preparation of metal surfaces, basic joining procedures, equipment handling, and appropriate safety practices. These learning activities can help adults connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and develop a better understanding of the procedures involved in basic welding. Adults’ knowledge of basic welding techniques refers to their understanding of welding tools, equipment, materials, procedures, and safety measures required for simple welding activities. Adequate knowledge is important because improper equipment handling, incorrect preparation of metal surfaces, inappropriate welding procedures, and poor adherence to safety practices can affect the quality of welding work and expose learners to avoidable risks. Adult learning may therefore improve knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities for adults to observe and practise appropriate welding procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of basic welding techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic welding techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic welding techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of welding tools, equipment, materials, surface preparation, basic joining procedures, equipment handling, and safety practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain knowledge relating to basic welding operations. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of basic welding techniques. It will recommend that adult learning and vocational programmes provide appropriate welding tools and equipment, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and adequate safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can improve adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and enhance their ability to apply basic welding techniques safely and effectively in relevant work and household activities.
