Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Fabric Identification

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support household activities, vocational development, and participation in garment-related occupations. Fabric identification involves recognizing different types of fabrics and understanding their characteristics, textures, appearances, uses, and care requirements. However, inadequate knowledge of fabric types may make it difficult for adults to select suitable materials for particular clothing and textile purposes. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of fabric identification and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their ability to recognize and distinguish different fabrics. Adult learning can provide practical experiences through demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, fabric samples, guided observation, and hands-on activities. In textile-related learning programmes, adults can be introduced to different fabric categories and taught how to identify them based on characteristics such as texture, weight, appearance, flexibility, absorbency, and general construction. Learning activities may involve examining fabric samples, comparing similar materials, classifying fabrics, and matching particular fabrics with appropriate uses. Such experiences can help learners develop familiarity with different textile materials and improve their ability to distinguish between them. Knowledge of fabric identification involves the ability to recognize different fabrics and understand the characteristics that distinguish one fabric from another. Adults need to develop knowledge of common fabric types, their physical properties, appropriate uses, and basic care requirements. Adequate knowledge can help individuals make better decisions when purchasing fabrics, selecting materials for garment construction, or caring for finished textile products. Adult learning may therefore strengthen fabric-identification knowledge by providing opportunities for learners to observe, compare, classify, and handle different fabric samples in practical learning situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate fabric-identification assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of different fabrics and their characteristics. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of fabric identification. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of fabric identification. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to recognize different fabric types, distinguish between materials based on their characteristics, and identify suitable uses for particular fabrics. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical exposure to fabric samples, combined with guided explanations and comparison activities, can strengthen learners’ understanding and confidence in identifying textile materials. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, textile educators, and skills-development programme facilitators. Learning programmes should incorporate real fabric samples, visual learning resources, classification exercises, guided observation, and practical identification activities. Providing learners with opportunities to examine and compare different fabrics can make learning more meaningful and help adults apply acquired knowledge when selecting materials for sewing, garment construction, household use, and other textile-related activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, vocational training providers, sewing practitioners, textile educators, and stakeholders interested in practical skills development. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide adequate exposure to different fabric samples and practical activities that promote accurate fabric identification. The study will conclude that well-organized adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of fabric identification and strengthen their ability to make appropriate decisions concerning the selection and use of textile materials.
