Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Image Composition
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support creative expression, visual communication, documentation, and vocational activities. Image composition refers to the deliberate arrangement of visual elements within a photograph or other image to create balance, clarity, emphasis, and visual appeal. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the principles that guide effective image composition, making it difficult for them to arrange subjects and other visual elements appropriately. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of image composition and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their understanding of fundamental composition principles. Adult learning can provide practical experiences through demonstrations, visual examples, discussions, guided observation, and hands-on photography activities. In photography and visual communication programmes, adults can be introduced to composition principles such as balance, symmetry, framing, leading lines, the rule of thirds, perspective, and appropriate use of space. Learning activities may involve comparing well-composed and poorly composed images, identifying specific composition techniques, rearranging visual elements, and producing photographs based on particular composition principles. These activities can help learners connect theoretical concepts with practical image-making experiences. Knowledge of image composition involves the ability to recognize and apply principles that determine how visual elements are arranged within an image. Adults need to understand how subject placement, spacing, perspective, balance, framing, and visual emphasis can influence the effectiveness of a photograph. Adequate knowledge can help individuals produce images that communicate ideas more clearly and attract appropriate visual attention. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities to observe different compositions, analyse visual examples, and practise applying composition principles during photography activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, photography, and creative learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate image-composition assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic composition principles. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of image composition. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of image composition. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved understanding of subject placement, balance, framing, leading lines, symmetry, perspective, and other basic composition principles. The findings are also expected to indicate that visual demonstrations, image analysis, and practical photography exercises can strengthen learners’ ability to recognize effective compositions and apply appropriate principles when creating photographs. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, photography instructors, digital literacy facilitators, creative skills trainers, and programme developers. Learning programmes should incorporate practical image-analysis exercises, visual comparisons, guided photography tasks, and opportunities for learners to experiment with different composition techniques. Such activities can make learning more meaningful and enable adults to apply composition knowledge in personal photography, digital communication, documentation, content creation, and other creative activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, photography practitioners, digital content creators, creative training providers, and stakeholders interested in practical visual communication skills. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide suitable photography resources and sufficient opportunities for learners to practise and evaluate different image-composition techniques. The study will conclude that well-organized adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of image composition and strengthen their ability to create photographs that are visually organized, clear, balanced, and effective.
