Effect of Adult Learning on Fishers’ Knowledge of Fish Species Identification

Abstract

Fish species identification refers to the ability to recognize and distinguish different species of fish based on their physical characteristics, body shape, colour patterns, size, fins, scales, markings, and other observable features. Adult learning can provide fishers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for accurately identifying fish species encountered during fishing activities. Adequate knowledge of fish species identification is important for proper sorting, handling, marketing, record keeping, and responsible fisheries practices. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult learning on fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification. Adult learning can expose fishers to species identification through practical demonstrations, visual learning materials, field observations, group discussions, guided identification exercises, and peer learning. These activities can help learners examine distinguishing characteristics and compare similar fish species using pictures, specimens, charts, and other instructional resources. Practical identification exercises can also enable fishers to connect newly acquired knowledge with species commonly encountered in their fishing activities. Such experience-based learning can make species identification more understandable and relevant to adult learners. Fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification refers to their ability to recognize, name, distinguish, and describe different fish species using their observable characteristics. This knowledge may include identifying differences in body structure, fins, scales, colouration, markings, size, and other distinguishing features. Improved identification knowledge can help fishers sort catches appropriately, communicate accurately about fish products, and make informed decisions during handling and marketing. Adult learning is therefore expected to strengthen fishers’ ability to identify fish species by providing structured information and opportunities for repeated practical identification. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise fishers participating in selected fishing communities and relevant adult learning or fisheries education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate fish species identification assessment designed to measure fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification. Fishers exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize and distinguish fish species based on their observable characteristics. The study may also indicate that practical identification exercises, visual materials, and field-based learning are particularly useful for strengthening species recognition. Such findings would demonstrate the value of adult learning in developing practical knowledge that can support fishers’ day-to-day fishing and post-harvest activities. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, fisheries extension workers, vocational trainers, fishing associations, and community development practitioners. Adult learning programmes can incorporate visual identification guides, specimen demonstrations, field observations, and repeated identification exercises to strengthen fishers’ knowledge. Learning activities can also focus on distinguishing species with similar physical characteristics to improve accuracy. Better knowledge may support appropriate sorting, communication, marketing, and handling of fish catches while strengthening fishers’ practical fisheries knowledge. The study is significant because improved knowledge of fish species identification can contribute to more accurate fish handling, sorting, marketing, and fisheries-related decision-making. It is recommended that adult learning programmes provide practical and accessible training using visual materials, specimens, identification guides, and field-based activities. Fisheries educators and extension practitioners should also provide opportunities for repeated practice to strengthen adults’ ability to distinguish different species accurately. The study concludes that adult learning can serve as an important means of improving fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification and supporting more effective fisheries-related practices.
