Effect of Adult Learning on Parents’ Ability to Support Children with Learning Difficulties
Abstract
Adult learning refers to educational activities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal, family, and social development, while parents’ ability to support children with learning difficulties refers to their capacity to recognize learning challenges, provide appropriate assistance, communicate with educators, and create supportive learning conditions at home. Parents may experience difficulties supporting children who require additional learning assistance because of limited knowledge about learning difficulties, appropriate support strategies, and available educational resources. Adult learning can provide parents with relevant knowledge and practical skills that may improve their ability to support such children. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult learning on parents’ ability to support children with learning difficulties. Adult learning opportunities may include parent education, family literacy programmes, workshops, community learning activities, counselling, and continuing education programmes. These learning experiences can provide parents with information about children's learning needs, appropriate communication approaches, learning support strategies, and ways of working with teachers. Through participation in adult learning, parents may develop practical skills for assisting children with learning tasks and creating supportive learning environments at home. Parents’ ability to support children with learning difficulties involves identifying areas where children require assistance, helping with learning activities, encouraging children, providing suitable learning materials, communicating with teachers, and maintaining supportive learning routines. Parents who acquire relevant knowledge through adult learning may become more confident in understanding and responding to their children’s learning needs. Adult learning can therefore strengthen parents’ capacity to provide appropriate educational support and reinforce learning outside the classroom. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents participating in selected adult learning programmes who have children experiencing learning difficulties. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult learning and parents’ ability to support children with learning difficulties. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a significant positive effect on parents’ ability to support children with learning difficulties. It is expected that parents who participate in relevant adult learning programmes will demonstrate improved knowledge of learning support strategies, greater confidence in assisting children, and better communication with educators. The findings may further indicate that adult learning can strengthen parents’ practical capacity to provide consistent educational support within the home. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of incorporating practical learning support strategies into adult education programmes for parents. Adult educators may provide demonstrations, discussions, and practical activities that help parents understand different learning needs and appropriate ways of supporting children. Collaboration between adult educators, parents, and teachers may also strengthen the application of knowledge acquired through adult learning programmes. The study will be beneficial to parents, children with learning difficulties, adult educators, teachers, schools, parent education providers, educational administrators, and policymakers. Parents may benefit from improved knowledge and practical skills for supporting children's learning, while teachers may benefit from stronger parental understanding and cooperation. Adult education providers and policymakers may also use the findings to develop parent-focused learning programmes that address the educational needs of families with children experiencing learning difficulties. The study recommends that adult education providers should incorporate practical child-learning support content into relevant adult learning programmes for parents. Parents should be encouraged to participate in educational activities that improve their understanding of learning difficulties and effective support strategies. Schools and teachers should also provide parents with appropriate guidance on how to reinforce learning at home. It is concluded that effective adult learning can significantly improve parents’ ability to support children with learning difficulties by strengthening their knowledge, confidence, communication, and practical educational support skills.
