Effect of Adult Learning Programmes on Participation in Community Support Activities
Abstract
Adult learning programmes refer to organized educational activities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while participation in community support activities refers to adults’ involvement in activities designed to provide assistance, resources, services, or practical support to individuals and groups within their communities. Community support activities can contribute to social welfare by helping address the needs of vulnerable individuals and strengthening mutual assistance. However, inadequate knowledge, limited skills, and insufficient awareness of community support opportunities may affect adults’ involvement. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult learning programmes on participation in community support activities. Adult learning programmes provide opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge through literacy classes, workshops, seminars, discussion groups, skills training, and practical learning activities. These programmes can expose participants to community needs, social responsibilities, cooperation, communication, and practical approaches to providing assistance. Through these learning experiences, adults may develop greater awareness and confidence as well as useful skills that can be applied when supporting individuals, families, and groups within their communities. Participation in community support activities involves adults contributing their time, knowledge, skills, resources, or practical assistance to activities that address identified community needs. Such activities may include supporting vulnerable persons, assisting families experiencing difficulties, contributing to welfare initiatives, providing practical help to community members, and supporting organized community assistance programmes. Adult learning programmes may influence participation by improving adults’ understanding of community needs and their ability to contribute effectively to appropriate support activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult learning programmes and involvement in community support activities. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning programmes have a positive effect on participation in community support activities. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult learning programmes will demonstrate better understanding of community needs, stronger willingness to provide support, and greater involvement in appropriate community support activities. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of connecting adult learning with practical community needs. Adult educators may use group projects, case studies, discussions, practical demonstrations, and community-based learning activities to help learners understand social needs and develop appropriate support skills. These approaches can provide opportunities for adults to apply acquired knowledge while contributing positively to their communities. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, community organizations, community leaders, social welfare practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to design learning activities that develop adults’ capacity to provide appropriate community support. Community organizations and social welfare practitioners may also benefit from greater involvement of knowledgeable and skilled adults, while policymakers may use the findings to strengthen community-based adult learning and support programmes. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate practical learning activities that address relevant community needs and develop skills for providing appropriate support. Adult educators should encourage group projects, problem-solving activities, and community-based learning experiences that enable participants to apply their knowledge. Community organizations should collaborate with adult learning providers to create suitable opportunities for adults to contribute to community support activities. The study will conclude that effective adult learning programmes can strengthen adults’ knowledge, skills, confidence, and willingness to participate in community support activities.
