Effect of Climate-Adaptation Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Household Climate Risks

Abstract

Climate-adaptation education refers to the knowledge and learning activities that equip individuals with the understanding and skills needed to recognize, prepare for, and respond to the effects of climate-related changes, while the ability to identify household climate risks concerns adults’ capacity to recognize environmental conditions and situations that may threaten household safety, resources, health, and daily living. As climate-related changes increasingly affect communities and household activities, adults need relevant knowledge to recognize risks and make informed decisions. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of climate-adaptation education on adults’ ability to identify household climate risks. Climate-adaptation education exposes adults to knowledge about climate-related hazards, changing environmental conditions, household vulnerability, preparedness measures, and practical approaches for reducing potential risks. It can help learners understand how environmental changes may affect housing, water availability, food security, household resources, and everyday activities. Through practical learning activities, adults may also develop greater awareness of warning signs, local environmental conditions, and appropriate household preparedness strategies. The ability to identify household climate risks involves recognizing conditions that may expose households to climate-related difficulties, including flooding, extreme heat, water shortages, changing rainfall patterns, and other environmental disruptions. Adults who possess adequate climate-adaptation knowledge may be better able to assess their household surroundings, recognize vulnerable areas, and distinguish potential risks from ordinary environmental conditions. Improved identification of such risks can support timely preparedness and more informed household decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify household climate risks. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of climate-adaptation education on adults’ ability to identify household climate risks. The study is expected to establish that climate-adaptation education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify household climate risks. It is anticipated that adults who receive relevant climate-adaptation education will demonstrate greater awareness of potential environmental threats and improved ability to recognize conditions that may affect their households. The findings may also indicate that practical exposure to climate-risk information strengthens adults’ understanding of household vulnerability and preparedness needs. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Integrating climate-adaptation activities into adult learning programmes may provide learners with practical opportunities to examine household environmental conditions, identify potential risks, interpret relevant information, and consider appropriate preparedness measures. Such activities can strengthen environmental awareness and encourage adults to apply climate-related knowledge to everyday household decision-making. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, environmental stakeholders, and policymakers concerned with climate resilience. It is recommended that adult learning programmes should incorporate practical climate-adaptation education that focuses on household risk identification, environmental observation, preparedness awareness, and appropriate risk-reduction practices. The study concludes that strengthening climate-adaptation education can improve adults’ capacity to recognize household climate risks and contribute to more informed and resilient household practices.
