Effect of Community Environmental Education on Household Waste Disposal Practices
Abstract
Community environmental education refers to organized educational activities that provide community members with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and awareness concerning environmental protection and sustainable practices, while household waste disposal practices refer to the methods used by households to store, handle, transport, and dispose of waste generated from domestic activities. Proper waste disposal is important for maintaining clean surroundings, reducing environmental pollution, and protecting community well-being. However, inappropriate household waste disposal practices remain a concern in many communities due to inadequate environmental knowledge and awareness. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of community environmental education on household waste disposal practices. Community environmental education exposes adults and other community members to issues such as waste generation, waste classification, proper storage, waste separation, recycling, reuse, collection, and safe disposal. Through community workshops, awareness campaigns, group discussions, practical demonstrations, sanitation programmes, and environmental learning activities, individuals can acquire knowledge about the consequences of improper waste disposal. These educational activities can also provide practical information on appropriate methods of handling different forms of household waste. Household waste disposal practices involve the actions taken by households in managing waste from the point of generation to final disposal. Appropriate practices may include using designated waste containers, separating waste, reducing unnecessary waste, reusing materials, recycling where possible, and disposing of refuse through approved channels. Households with adequate environmental knowledge may be better prepared to adopt appropriate disposal methods and avoid practices that contribute to pollution and environmental degradation. Community environmental education can therefore provide relevant knowledge for improving household waste disposal practices. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults from selected households within the study area who have participated in or have access to community environmental education activities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical observation checklist designed to measure exposure to community environmental education and household waste disposal practices. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community environmental education has a significant positive effect on household waste disposal practices. It is expected that households with greater exposure to community environmental education will demonstrate more appropriate methods of storing, handling, separating, and disposing of household waste. The study may also establish that environmental education improves household members’ knowledge of the environmental consequences of improper waste disposal and encourages safer disposal practices. The findings will have implications for adult and community education by emphasizing the importance of practical environmental education in improving household waste management. Community education facilitators may use demonstrations, household-based activities, waste-sorting exercises, environmental campaigns, and practical sanitation projects to strengthen learning. Such approaches can help community members translate environmental knowledge into appropriate waste disposal practices within their households. The study will be significant to household members, adult education facilitators, community leaders, environmental educators, local authorities, waste management organizations, and policymakers. Households may benefit from improved knowledge and practices relating to waste disposal, while facilitators may gain useful information for designing more effective community environmental education programmes. Local authorities and waste management organizations may also use the findings to strengthen environmental awareness and household waste management initiatives. The study will recommend that community environmental education programmes should emphasize practical lessons on household waste storage, separation, reduction, recycling, reuse, collection, and safe disposal. Community education providers should organize regular environmental awareness campaigns and practical demonstrations that address common household waste management challenges. Local authorities and environmental organizations should also support continuous community-based environmental education initiatives. The study concludes that effective community environmental education can contribute to improved household waste disposal practices.
