Effect of Community Learning Activities on the Well-Being of Older Adult Learners
Abstract
Community learning activities refer to organized educational and learning experiences provided within community settings to promote knowledge acquisition, social engagement, personal development, and continued learning among adults, while well-being refers to the overall physical, emotional, psychological, and social quality of life experienced by individuals. Older adult learners may experience challenges such as loneliness, reduced social contact, limited learning opportunities, and changes associated with ageing, which can affect their overall well-being. This study will examine the effect of community learning activities on the well-being of older adult learners. Community learning activities may include literacy classes, skills training, educational discussions, cultural learning, health-related learning sessions, workshops, and other group-based learning experiences. These activities provide older adults with opportunities to acquire useful knowledge, develop skills, share experiences, and remain intellectually active. Regular participation in community learning can also create supportive learning environments where older adults interact with peers and develop a sense of belonging. The well-being of older adult learners involves their emotional stability, psychological satisfaction, social connectedness, sense of purpose, and ability to maintain a positive quality of life. Participation in community learning activities may contribute to well-being by providing opportunities for meaningful engagement, intellectual stimulation, companionship, and personal development. When older adults are actively involved in appropriate learning activities, they may experience greater satisfaction, confidence, social connection, and sense of purpose. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise older adult learners participating in selected community learning activities in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in community learning activities and the well-being of older adult learners. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community learning activities have a significant positive effect on the well-being of older adult learners. It is expected that older adults who participate regularly in community learning activities will report better emotional, psychological, and social well-being than those with limited participation. The study may also establish that community-based learning provides older adults with meaningful opportunities for continued learning, social connection, and personal development. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of older adults in community education settings. Adult educators may employ participatory teaching methods, group discussions, practical activities, peer learning, and experience-based learning to make community learning more engaging and relevant to older learners. Learning activities should also accommodate the interests, abilities, experiences, and learning needs of older adults to encourage sustained participation. The study will be beneficial to older adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, community development organizations, social development agencies, and policymakers. Older adults may benefit from improved opportunities for learning and personal development, while adult educators may gain information for designing programmes that support the overall well-being of older learners. Organizations responsible for community education may also use the findings to strengthen learning opportunities for ageing populations. The study will recommend that community learning providers develop accessible, relevant, and age-appropriate learning activities that address the educational and social needs of older adults. Adult educators should incorporate interactive and experience-based learning approaches while creating supportive environments that encourage regular participation. Community organizations should also provide adequate resources and opportunities for older adults to engage in meaningful learning activities. In conclusion, effective community learning activities can contribute to improved well-being by providing older adult learners with opportunities for continued learning, social connection, personal development, and meaningful engagement.
