Effect of Creative Learning Programmes on Self-Expression among Adult Learners
Abstract
Creative learning programmes refer to educational activities that encourage learners to explore ideas, communicate thoughts, and demonstrate understanding through creative methods such as drawing, storytelling, drama, music, crafts, and other expressive activities, while self-expression refers to the ability of individuals to communicate their thoughts, feelings, opinions, experiences, and ideas effectively. Self-expression is important among adult learners because it can support communication, confidence, interpersonal relationships, and active involvement in learning situations. However, some adult learners may experience difficulties expressing their ideas because of limited opportunities for creative interaction and restricted learning environments. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of creative learning programmes on self-expression among adult learners. Creative learning programmes provide learners with opportunities to participate in activities that encourage imagination, experimentation, communication, and personal interpretation. Through activities such as storytelling, role-play, drama, drawing, music, creative writing, and practical arts, adult learners can communicate ideas in different forms rather than relying solely on conventional classroom responses. These programmes can also create supportive learning environments where adults are encouraged to share their experiences, develop new ideas, and communicate their perspectives through creative activities. Self-expression involves the ability of adult learners to communicate their ideas, emotions, experiences, opinions, and personal perspectives in verbal, written, artistic, or other appropriate forms. Effective self-expression can help learners communicate more clearly and participate more confidently in learning activities. Creative learning programmes may influence self-expression by providing adults with practical opportunities to explore and communicate their thoughts in different ways, thereby encouraging greater willingness and ability to express themselves. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to creative learning programmes and the level of self-expression among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of creative learning programmes on self-expression. The study is expected to establish that creative learning programmes have a positive effect on self-expression among adult learners. Adult learners who are exposed to creative learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater ability and willingness to communicate their thoughts, opinions, feelings, experiences, and ideas. The findings may also show that creative activities provide adult learners with alternative opportunities for communication and encourage more active expression during learning experiences. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators may need to incorporate creative activities into learning programmes to provide learners with opportunities to communicate beyond conventional written and verbal exercises. The use of drama, storytelling, creative writing, music, drawing, and other suitable activities may make learning more interactive while creating opportunities for adult learners to express their ideas and experiences. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, community learning centres, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities to communicate their ideas and experiences, while adult educators may gain useful knowledge about the value of creative approaches in adult learning. Programme administrators and policymakers may also use the findings to support the development of learning programmes that provide adults with varied opportunities for communication and personal expression. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate creative learning activities into their instructional practices. Adult educators should provide supportive environments where learners can participate in storytelling, drama, creative writing, visual arts, music, and other suitable expressive activities. Learning programmes should also encourage active involvement and allow adults to communicate their experiences and ideas through different creative forms. The study concludes that creative learning programmes can contribute to improved self-expression among adult learners by providing meaningful opportunities for communication, creativity, and personal expression.
