Effect of Digital Literacy on Adults’ Ability to Search for Reliable Information Online

Abstract

Digital literacy refers to the knowledge and skills required to access, understand, evaluate, and use digital technologies and online information effectively, while adults’ ability to search for reliable information online refers to their capacity to locate, evaluate, and select accurate and trustworthy information from internet-based sources. The ability to identify reliable online information is increasingly important because adults depend on digital platforms for educational, financial, health, employment, and everyday information. However, limited digital literacy may make it difficult for adults to distinguish reliable information from inaccurate or misleading content online. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of digital literacy on adults’ ability to search for reliable information online. Digital literacy provides adults with practical skills such as using internet browsers, entering effective search terms, navigating websites, comparing information from different sources, identifying credible websites, checking publication details, and recognizing questionable online content. Through digital literacy instruction, practical exercises, demonstrations, and guided online activities, adults can develop greater competence in using digital tools. These skills can help adults conduct more purposeful online searches and make better judgments about the information they encounter. The ability to search for reliable information online involves identifying relevant information, selecting appropriate search results, checking the credibility of sources, comparing information across sources, and distinguishing trustworthy content from inaccurate or misleading information. Adults with adequate digital literacy may be better prepared to evaluate online information before accepting or using it. Digital literacy can therefore provide adults with the practical skills required to conduct effective searches and identify reliable online information. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected digital literacy programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical online information-search assessment designed to measure digital literacy and adults’ ability to search for reliable information online. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that digital literacy has a significant positive effect on adults’ ability to search for reliable information online. It is expected that adults with higher levels of digital literacy will demonstrate greater ability to locate relevant information, assess online sources, and distinguish reliable information from questionable content. The study may also establish that digital literacy improves adults’ confidence and competence in conducting purposeful online searches. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of practical digital literacy instruction. Adult education facilitators may incorporate internet-search exercises, website evaluation activities, source-comparison tasks, and practical demonstrations into digital literacy programmes. These approaches can help adults develop the skills needed to navigate online information environments and make more informed judgments about the reliability of information. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, digital literacy trainers, community learning centres, educational institutions, information providers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to locate and evaluate useful online information, while facilitators may gain information for developing more effective digital literacy programmes. Educational institutions and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen digital information literacy initiatives for adults. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate practical training on online searching, source evaluation, website credibility, search strategies, and identification of unreliable digital content. Adult education providers should use hands-on exercises that allow learners to search for information and compare different online sources. Continuous digital literacy education should also be encouraged to help adults adapt to changing online information environments. The study concludes that effective digital literacy can contribute to improved ability among adults to search for reliable information online.
